You Monster! by Jared Sartin

[raw]
made by Jared Sartin for LD33 (COMPO)
Simple game, ended up turning more into developing my engine. You play as a blob eating people who are waiting on the roofs to be rescued by the police. You get one point for every human (blue dot) you eat and lose 5 points for every one you miss. Up to jump, down to slam down.

What I liked:
- Simple but nice camera effects;
- Down button.

What could improve:
- Don't use mouse for "retry" (or put the down button in the same button as jump button);
- I needed to read the info about the game in order to understand the link with the theme.

Adding some texture to the purple blocks could let me know that I'm running (hard to tell at first) Otherwise fun infinite jumper.

Not very original, I'm afraid. But it was fun, yes. Maybe you should have used some sprites for the people, now it feels like I'm a rectangle eating other rectangles.

Platforming mechanic feels good, screen shake is an excellent touch. Consider a score different than the seemingly random blue dots - some games I'd go a really long time before seeing blue so my score was low but I thought I had done well.

Interesting take on the genre. Love the slam down feature :+1:

The graphics, which appears to be placeholders, looks incorrectly scaled and smudged across the screen. I dont know how the theme applies here and didnt know what I was looking at until I read the descriptions. The controls should appear in the game. Really needs some sound and music.

I hope Im not too harsh, I wish you all the best. Its great that you got to work on your engine, next time you'll complete something! :)

Pretty fun runner. Once I read that you could press the down arrow it got way better.
I wish you could of added sound and graphics.

I like the runner idea mixed with the theme, but I feel like if you are going to have a point system, especially one where missing blue dots counts more than acquiring them, then the game should have more draw distance or the view should be larger so players can see the dots and prepare for them. Definitely a fun idea though.

Dig it.
- The narrative. Blobs are sadly absent in our modern lives.

Don't dig it.
- Tough to control. I couldn't get the timing down.

Suggestions.
- The blob should grow! I expected it to get bigger and bigger as I ate people.

Fun, yes. It didn't quite fit in with the theme, though I can see how it tries to. It's a good jumping game, but I don't see how it really ties into the theme.

Very nice mechanics and well done camera effects. One edit I would make though would be the ability to "ghost jump" or jump even after you fall off the edge (used for reaching those hard to reach distances, even in classic platformers) but that's just a minor thing.... Keep up the good work!
