Abduction by Keon

[raw]
made by Keon for LD33 (JAM)
Abduction is an arcade "upgrade-em-up" in which you control an alien UFO and abduct humans for research. Each round lasts 30 seconds, during which you must abduct as many humans as possible. In between rounds, you upgrade your ship and unlock powerful special weapons to challenge the increasingly harder waves of enemies. An average player should be able to unlock everything in 15-20 minutes.

The audio for the game not mine, and full credits for the sources of the audio tracks can be found under /res/sfx. Everything else was created and programmed by me.

Setup:

The game has been tested on Windows 7 and 8, but is currently untested on Mac and Linux. If it does/doesn't work on either of those systems please let me know. Abduction is a java game and will require a working JRE to run.

To setup, download the zip file from the given link. Extract the zip and run the .jar file. Alternately, if you are on Windows, you can also run the .exe file.

Controls:
WASD or Arrow Keys: Move UFO.
Spacebar - Hold to use tractor beam.
Mouse - Move to aim, left click to shoot plasma blasters.
E: If owned, deploy microsingularity superweapon.
R: If owned, deploy mind control superweapon.
T: If owned, deploy wormhole superweapon.

Update 1.1: 8:51 PST should now work on Linux.
Edit: Added "all platforms" and "source" links. I was deprived of sleep when I submitted and didn't notice I could change the downloads. Sorry for confusion.

Looks good. But when I open OS/X build, there is a EXE file. How to play it on Mac.

Great work! I enjoyed the mechanics and controls. Only I can say is that the UFO moves like it's on ice.

@A_K and AntonyBaasan:

I was lazy - all Windows OS/X and Linux link to the same thing. The jar should be a runnable jar - you can the jar itself either by double clicking or if that fails doing java -jar Abduction1.1.jar. If that doesn't work for you let me know, I can make you a .app, but first let me know if the .jar works for you. A friend tried it on mac and said it worked running the jar.

Sorry for the confusion, and I hope this helps.

That was fun. Really cool made and fun to play. I like all these various usages for humans.
Sounds and graphics are also fitting well.

Nice game, although it took me a while to realize I'm not supposed to kill all the humans, but capture/abduct them. Heh, I should have read the description first. I accidently skipped the tutorial pages. Anyway, I had fun with this game.

I had this exact same idea a couple of years ago, and the design of the ship was almost the same :o incredible. Nice job

I loved slowly lifting up soon to be abductees. This is a good simulation of our impending UFO apocalypse.

You have to use the .jar to open it on Mac OS X

Quite a fun game! Really enjoyed the upgrade progression, nice combination of fighting and abducting. Never felt like I was in too much danger, so perhaps more enemies would've added to the challenge (flying enemies?). Really good effort, definitely had fun with this one!

Good job! Just out of curiosity, is it possible to abduct every human in a level?

@jcourt: On the earliest levels (before tanks start showing up) I've gotten every human once or twice, but on later levels no. The problem is some more spawn in the sides during the game, so if you clear an area you have to go back again to get the new spawns. If you get lucky they all spawn on one side and you can grab them then, but often you have to run back and forth and will probably miss one or two.

On the later levels not at all.
