CharnHell by Resonance Arcade

[raw]
made by Resonance Arcade for LD32 (JAM)
A local multiplayer 1v1 top-down king-of-the-hill dungeon brawler.

Battle for supremacy, and a way out of impending hell and fiery eternal torture, grappling with one another, and eventually using the bones of slain enemies as makeshift weapons. Stand in the light when it appears and if you stay in it long enough you win!

You are in limbo, waiting to be judged, and the devil has decided he'd rather like to see you and your counterpart duke it out for his amusement. Well, you, your counterpart and infinite skeletons. Luckily, being the resourceful people you are, you've worked out that you can dish out some damage with body parts left just lying around (how convenient!) the arena.

Controlling Your Character:
* [Movement] + [Dash] + [Action] (context sensitive)
* Quick press [Dash] to do a small dash, hold [Dash] to charge. Release to do a longer dash
* Quick press [Action] when near a body part or spear to pick it up
* When carrying an item, hold [Action] to charge. Release to throw the item at the other player or the skeletons.
* When you meet a player, hammer [Action] to grapple. The winner walks away, while the loser is dazed and vulnerable

P1 Controls:
[Movement] WASD
[Action] SPACE
[Dash] L-SHIFT

P2 Controls:
[Movement] ARROWS
[Action] NUMPAD 0
[Dash] RCTRL

Alternatively, plug in two XBox controllers, and use the D-PAD or LEFT stick for [Movement], A for [Action] and B for [Dash]

Features:
* Dead players and skeletons will leave behind body parts for you to pick up when they die. Use these body parts to destroy enemies and the other player
* There's one spear at the top of the map that players can use for the initial attack
* Players must stay inside the shining light for as long as they can - but this isn't easy! The other player and the skeletons are out to get you!
* The light's colour and brightness will fade in and out depending on who's winning. The winner will be the player that stands in the light the longest - but watch out - it's easy to be swarmed by the enemy, allowing your opponent to gain the advantage!

Bugs:
* Many! We will fix things up in the coming weeks :) We have many more ideas for the game too, to make it more fun and chaotic.

The game looks really good, i just couldn't understand the inputs (keys?). I love the graphics and the music, the physics is awesome as well. Well done

It's kind of hard to control. But I like graphics and physics!

Thanks for the feedback guys. Keys are WASD + L-Shift & space for P1, or ARROWS + R-Ctrl & NumPad 0 for P2. Or you can plug in two xbox pads and use DPad or LStick for movement, and A + B.

Press A over spears or body parts to pick them up (the parts that come out of dead enemies). Hold A to throw. Press B to do a short dash, hold B to do a longer dash.

We kinda rushed the finishing touches - could have been clearer with the instructions!

The bones sound is really nice.
The map has charisma and the movable objects give life to the game.
I didn't quite get how to play, thou. Is the second player a must? I played alone.

I've tried again with an xbox controller and got it (last time i didn't read your explainatory comment, maybe you can modify the description).
I found difficult to see things to pick. Dash has a little lag.

Yes, it's a 2 player local battle game. We were inspired by playing Nidhogg and Towerfall recently at a LAN Party. We had a LOT of fun, and wanted to create a similar experience.

Once you get the controls, this is a lot of fun to play. There are a fair few bugs, but we'll try to get those fixed up and it'll be a lot more solid. We definitely need more player feedback, and make lots of things clearer. We got to crunch time and didn't even have a game manager together, so I threw that together quickly and Lew made us some overlay graphics. We could do a lot better with a bit more time :)

We might make it networkable, or maybe add some second player AI so you can play it alone... but we didn't have time for that during the jam! We have absolutely TONS more ideas for it - such as procedural level generation, more enemies, more ways to attack, better sound etc.

Unfortunately, I am insanely busy at the moment (had to take time off work for Ludum Dare!), so I'm not going to get to it immediately, but I've enjoyed playing it so much that I think we might do a little more work on it and make it a proper release :)

Thank you all so much for your feedback :D

The graphics, controls and basic mechanics are all absolutely top notch... but! We just couldn't figure out the controls right. I think some type of tutorial in game would have been ideal, although I understand making something like that would have taken precious time. Still, a fantastic entry!
