Protector Of The Shrine
----------------------------

Ultima -style 2D RPG-ish game in which you need to protect the shrine from invading monsters which appears from the darkness.

However, you do not have many weapons to defend; only your sword and an ability to sing which confuses the monsters. "LALALAAAAa..."

Funny! I was able to defend the shrine until score 1250. The command key "1" would be better with a mouse right click or a space key though.

Even if it was just a fun game, that rekindled many good Ultima memories. You captured that style perfectly.

Score: 5650. :)

Fun game and I enjoyed the singing! Would be good if Singing would be with mouse or space key, I also had large issues with the hitting using left mouse key, felt like I only hit with every third attempt.

It's always cute when you have a non-violent option for dealing with enemies. Could've used a visual indicator for when your singing was available, but otherwise I like it.

haha. :D Thanks for the comments and feedback! Really appreciated! Especially, if I managed to capture even just a slice of Ultima -feeling. ^^

I couldn't work out what singing did..? A decent, challenging game though. Well done!

Made it to 4950 points. I agree with volatile dove, having to pick up your hand to press sing makes it difficult. Additionally, using the mouse to attack when there isn't smooth scrolling felt difficult as where I was going to aim is moving (might just be me though as I'm not a big PC gaming).

I had some difficult with the mouse control to attack my enemies, I think it would be better with space or something.

But the 'La-laaa' is nice and it certanly have everything to do with the theme.

Way to go!

Full score from me for that audio! The track is great and the singing was pretty funny.

Might be cool to add a bump attack like in roguelikes, rather than clicking to attack - I got a bit of an achy finger!

Couldn't make it past 1000 no matter how I tried. Neat little game. Best part was the singing, naturally.

One simple way to improve the game would have been to have some sort of animation for swinging your sword. Right now it is a bit disorienting!

I found the controls difficult at first, but got the hand of it pretty quickly, so far my high score is 5000

Hmm.. seems that top high score among reviewers is around 5650. That is great info, I actually got close to 7000.. but because I am the game maker I give you people some slack, hehe ;)

And btw. that singing voice is my own ofc. I never sing, but game development does incredible things to programmers :D !

What comes to controls, they are indeed a bit difficult. Luckily, it makes the game harder on "purpose" :>

I've played a few games with singing in them now.
Great throwback feel to Ultima.

Very nice graphic style, and the singing really afects the gameplay. Very, very good entry.

Btw, full karaoke tower defense would be amazing :P

An animation for the player when he attacks would be handy as I couldn't actually tell if my mouse clicks were working. The monster designs were cool and it had some nice background music. Also whoever that is you recorded for the singing sound will probably be signed to a record label, so keep me updated if an album is released.

Lalaaaaaah. Very simple game but it works. Nice music. However, i don't understand how to use the sword, mouse is not working for me...

@Bastienre4 it works if you are close to the enemies, or at least works for others? sword range ;)

And btw, thanks for everyone who shared feedback and tried out the game. ! I enjoy reading these comments. :)

It was quite difficult for me. Using a mouse in an RPG where your main weapon is close-ranged is not fun, though that may be what retro games were. The song made everything hilarious, though I can't really see it as a main weapon.

It's refreshing to see some Ultima-inspired games, especially after recently replaying Quest of the Avatar. The art is coherent and the grid movement works just fine. I found attacking enemies to be difficult to do with the mouse. For a game styled as Ultima, I would have personally preferred eight directional movement with the numpad, with enemies being struck by moving into them.

Overall a fairly good game.

Fun fact: The first time I pressed "Sing", I thought he said, "Iolo!"

Thanks for the feedback guys and girls(?) :D

It's always nice to see new suggestions how to improve the gameplay..!

@Firaa yea, I didn't even consider using eight direction movement with numpad. Maybe it could something which I should test in practise, I'm inspired! :P

It does have that Ultima feel to it a little. Or just DOS RPG one in general. Attacking is wonky, maybe hilight the target tile or something.

An unconventional weapon ... and the most scary in existence ...
Funny game, that sound just makes it perfect :D

As a fellow Ultima lover, I have to say this is great! The music is nice and very appropriate, the singing is funny and you had me there clicking for a good while (I almost got to 10000!). As a possible improvement, an indicator to know the time when you can sing again would be nice.

Ok, firstly, awesome interpretation and you did a great job. Secondly, I'm gonna sue you. I will never stop singing "La-laaaa". Even my girlfriend is randomly "la-laaaing".

PS. Is too damn hard to land a successful attack.

hehe. Thanks for the comments... :D !

@smokecastles I think you are holding the third place in scores.! I have made 15150 and my cousin little over 16000 considering the time I had to balance the game.. these kind of scores are probably the maximum. :)

Thus, sorry for everyone being afk for a while. I was just too exhausted after the game jam. I will be playing all your games who commented asap. !

The controls could do with a little tweaking but this is a really fun game and you've hit the Ultima feel just right.

I made it to 1200 points which I think is pretty poor... :)
