Sticks and Stones by adsilcott

[raw]
made by adsilcott for LD32 (JAM)
This is our first Ludum Dare. It was an amazing experience, and I'm looking forward to the next one!

Words are the weapons in this game. Navigate a world where the most harmful and most helpful things are words-- just like the real world! (Not to mention the internet.)

Up, W, or Space to jump.
Down or S to roll.

See how long you can survive by only collecting positive words. The only hint to your mood is the character's animation.

Many thanks to everyone on the team, you guys did an amazing job!

Made in Unity.

WebGL didn't work at all, so you'll need to do the hack to get it working in chrome.

Update: I had a chance to make an updated version that fixes some of the bugs:

So emotional.

You guys should continue making this after ludum dare, I think this game could have some great potential.

Love the theme and appropriate visuals, but it's just a regular runner otherwise.

Short and simple, great! I love the animation and mood of it. Not sure why you left out the audio rating, I think the music is beautiful too.

Didn't take much to get him down after so many compliments.

Minimalistic, perhaps more so than I'd wanted.

Congratulations for your first LD entry :).

You nailed that feeling of people using words as weapons to hurt people! It feels like someone reading a diary of somebody whom I had a nice friendship then it fell apart over time (or maybe I'm thinking too much).

I'd like to see a full version and improvements upon this concept! :3

Well done. I loved this one. It seemed a simple endless running game at first, until I let a positive word hit the character. Then watching the character throw his chest out with confidence I understood what you were doing here. Great job, smooth controls, great artwork. I actually felt sad for the little guy at the end. This game could easily be featured in one of the anti-bullying campaigns going on.

Am I missing something? On the web version nothing happens when I get hit by the words.

Great game! The concept is so strong! Agree with the above comments to push this further and with the comment with "anti bullying". Especially this whole cyber bullying thing, I think that a game communicates this idea quite nicely. Nice work!

Thanks for all the great feedback!! It's very encouraging and we're considering building this out into a fuller game. :)
@jmborden: Depending on the words that appear, it might take a few hits for the character to react. It's on my todo list to add a momentary reaction when any words hit, right now it just affects the character's overall mood. Also I noticed that when you die while jumping the animation can get stuck. I'll post a link to a fixed version when it's done!

Simplicity and depth are a hard to achieve combination in a game. You managed to pull it off in your game in an Elegant way.
Awaiting for more games developed by you.

According to the others comments, there must be some bugs in the linux version. The words are coming way to fast, impossible to dodge. If I want to jump, the player is jerking around in the air.

Easy controls, that is how I like it.
I love the story on avoiding negative words and reaching toward the positive labels. It felt the words were applying to me personally.
