One Man's Desert by spencerjp

[raw]
made by spencerjp for LD36 (JAM)
The ancient Egyptian's mummification technology turned out to be too good -- the archaic, ASCII desert is crawling with risen mummies.

Use WASD to move. Attack with Return or just running into things. Sprint with LShift.

Feautures:
- an infinite desert
- pyramids
- ominous monoliths
- watering holes (in which you can heal yourself)
- rocks
- shrubs
- camels

Shortcomings:
- There's no sound
- When you "die", you can keep playing
- There is no win condition
- There is no leveling up or progress

I like the art style and colors, which clearly show the surroundings and the fact that you're on a desert. The ASCII art and the smiling little guy really bring into mind some old text-based adventure games. The light colorscheme (vs the usual dark terminal colors) puts me in a good mood.

It's funny that you can hit yourself by attacking while moving forwards. :D A nice little detail is the dot line that follows you and gets longer when you sprint. I'd also love to be able to enter the pyramids, and maybe loot some stuff there. ;) Traps could be interesting as well along with moving guardians.

The movement felt a bit unsmooth at first, but it felt like I got used to it after a while. You could experiment with smooth camera movement although I'm not entirely sure if it would fit the text-based feeling.

It would be nice to to see a post-jam version with some sounds and perhaps an objective.

Beautifully looking demo ^_^ Wish there would be something to do. And perhaps a way to "observe" things (e.g. show some info about them) - right now all those mummies, camels and shrubs feel quite "thin" and not much different.

This isn't ascii art, by the way, it's called ansi art. Doesn't make it any worse though.

Good like finishing it, if you are going to do that. I'd play extended version.

This is a cool looking world! I think I ran into an asterisk enemy at some point, which was probably the most surprising thing that happened. I think it would be interesting if you slowly became the desert.
