Le Roman de Goupil by Luke Magitem

The idea was to make a little storytelling game, à la Telltale Games. The story follows the journey of Goupil, a little fox who lost his parents. An old and wise owl will give him a very unconventional weapon: the foxy wand, an old stick of which hang little bells. The owl says it is magical and will give Goupil the power of cunning.

I don't really post it to compete, since it's clearly not in a sufficient good shape to do so, but more because I told myself that I'll make the compo until the end.

I didn't have the time to write and set up more than one scene (the prologue, before the arrival of the owl). The same goes for the art. Only some frames are "final", some were made quickly to post something, and the rest is just black backgrounds with plain text describing what's supposed to be shown.

English and french traductions available.

For those who are interested to see the final version, I guess it'll be up in some months, on http://n42c.com/

I like the scene, its a nice prototype for what it is!
I'd try this again when it is a little further along.

Unfortunate that you didn't have the time to finish this. I love the concept and the whimsical graphics, and the mechanics seem solid. I'll check back later to see if you have developed this further.

Love the art style! One issue I had was I was pressing right to advance the story, but pressed it again too quickly and accidentally chose a story option I didn't want. I think having a different control button to advance to the next scene would help.

I couldn't play it for the web version, I don't know how to "go next" after the first sentence. I tried to click, the space bar, enter key. I'm using Firefox.

The Windows version is missing the "Goupil_Data" folder. I'd really like to test this game to show it to my daughter, she was very interested on how to make a game when I was coding mine.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

-I guess that the language bugs are, like they say, "not bugs, but features" =D
It's just that I didn't had time to make all the pictures, so I put in black pics with a sentence describing what should be here, both in french and english.
But if there is a language bug beside of this, please say it.

-Ranmara: Thanks for the advice!

-Mathieu: It was the arrow keys to advance in the game, sorry I not said it before ^^'
I also remade the Win/Mac/Linux versions, it should work now.

thoughts:
- aah! sudden sound effect!
- I really like the graphics, they give a sense of dynamism, despite being fixed

Storytelling games are quite ambitious for a game jam, but that's a nice try. It's not finished, but you laid out a nice beginning for the game. Graphics are nice and it feels like an old adventure game mixed with a children's storybook (which is really nice).

I set the volume a little bit high while playing so I really ended up jumping from my chair when I heard the shot. :P

P.s.: played the web version and the development console popped up in front of the game. :/

Good work, ambitous doing graphics for a 48h jam :) Remember reading standard children books to my kid brothers a few years ago, and I can see that stuff like this would be a good update (for tablets) .. so while reading you could ask the kid what they want to do and have a good little interactive story instead of just flipping pages.
