RRRR by kaype

made by kaype for LD32 (COMPO)
Good Morning!

So this is my entry for the compo. It's called 'RRRR', stylized as 'XXXX'. I kinda wanted to make a game with a rather simple art style, but still give it a very bouncy and fun mood. The mechanics are simple, the idea behind it is super clichéd, and more importantly, it's challening! Just like all of my games I try to make sure they maintain a certain level of difficulty. While the game is rageworthy, I tried to tone down the difficulty a bit though, so it's still fun and not just punishing. Hopefully that'll pay off :P

INSTRUCTIONS (READ BEFORE PLAYING):
You are in a hot air balloon floating around in the sky trying to protect the area below from being bombed. To do this, you use your *BUBBLE GUN* to 'softly and gently' defuse them. Later on in the game, you also must avoid getting hit with lasers. Let me just warn you, that gets pretty tricky! You win once you get at least 5000 points.

The controls are described in-game.

REQUIRES JAVA 7 OR HIGHER!
Have fun with this ladies and gentlemen.

Now then, to get some sleep...

The art is really good and the music is pretty good too. Overall every part of the game fells really polished. The gameplay was fun, but a little slow. The bombs were too easy the lasers were too hard.

Idea is pretty unique, and the splash screen helps create
an old style theme for the game. Audio is pretty interesting, and graphics are consistent.

My first impression was "smooth/well put together"; Really looks and feels great.

Got a score of 600 and must say the game is very enjoyable.

This is a pretty cool little game! I love the pixel art and the fact that you defuse these bombs in such a silly way :P

There was a small bug where bombs would despawn as soon as they spawned as you were moving downwards, but I got a score of 4100 on my first go and 4550 on my second. Good work!

Nice one ! graphics work fine, gameplay is perfectly fluid. Nice job. Can I catch the bird ? I also saw thin red lines appearing/disappearing when I reach 1000 points. Is it part of the game ?

First I thought I was being bombed, and I had to dodge the bombs, but that was me not reading the description properly. Okay game, but I'm not gonna reach the 5000 points :P

Good art, adequate audio and a different take on the twin stick shooter (though I missed playing that on a proper gamepad). I have to agree with one comment that said that bombs were easy and lasers were hard. There's not much room of what to do with them, and trying to avoiding them is a hit and miss affair.

Also, something that bothered me is that bombs would damage the balloon even if they explode far away, which doesn't make too much sense. Other than that, a very nice entry. :)

Kaype! After always being in IRC with you, and your annoying image posting, I can play your game :D

It's alot of fun, music is nice but strange, and the aesthetics are cool too. One thing I didn't understand though is the rewards I got for moving, it seemed just as easy to just stay put and fire bubbles. Also, I didn't have much time to respond to the bomb, but I 'spose that is part of the challenge.

I really enjoyed this :D

A bit wonky but still easy thanks to large bubble hitboxes. Some randomly disappearing bombs when moving up/down that seemed buggy. You also could've indicated the incoming lasers somehow.

I'm kinda sad that you turned innovation off; I've never played anything like this. :P This was a pleasant way to spend some time.

I liked the music and sfx, it fit for the strange little world of bombs falling and mobile defense hot air balloons.
The bombs still blow up if you move down even though it seems liek you should be able to capture them.

A fun little game with great polish in the animations, consistent art style and positive feedback when increasing your score.
