Squareon by okkolobr

[raw]
made by okkolobr for LD31 (COMPO)
Well, here is Squareon, a game filled with squared-neon.

I've gone really (too ?) classic here. Try to reach an highscore by clicking on a square of the most represented color to get points.

You will get even more points if you click on the mystical rainbowy square when he appears.

Have fun !

Edit : Post Compo
First, a HUGE THANKS to all of you who have tested / commented this game. It is so motivating to have feedback, from this great community !

Then, I'm working on a post-compo version, you can find a WIP version here :
http://okowalczyk.free.fr/LudumDare/31/PostJam.html

Still not colorblind friendly, but with many little modifications and fixes.

Hope you will enjoy !

The game is a little too difficult and seems unfair.

Hmm, interesting game! It feels like abit more luck than skill though (if I am not mistaken it is just click the colour thats shown most..?) It has nice visuals though, with particles and glowing. Good game!

Cool game! It is really hard and you really gotta think on each level but I like it!

Very nice. I didn't read your description before playing, so I was wondering what to do at first... well that was silly.
Very nice coloring and neat gameplay.

Managed 10960 - cool idea, it's tricky to estimate how much of each colour is on the screen :) The penalty for misclicking seems low though, I think it's better to click semi-randomly than wait to get the right answer, perhaps the penalty should scale up?

I think the simple mechnic is far away enough, but it needs a little thing... moving blocks maybe ? get +3s when you find the good color ? Maybe colors mixing in a way could be cool.
Love neons :)

Great idea! It gets quite difficult when there are few squares on the screen.

It's not as easy as it looks, that's for sure. My eyes hurt now~

There are some nice touches in here, such as the way that the tiles are animated. Good game.

It would be an excellent mobile / tablet game.

I really like this! :D Not easy, can be cool and relaxing as well as stress-filled when you make a panic rush to beat your score and fail miserably ^^ My kind of games!

Love it! The concept is absurdly easy to grasp, and yet the game turns out to be harder, and way more addictive, than it seems at first sight.

Good work on the neon visuals, too. An awesome job overall, congratulations!

simple yet challenging! would have been smoother if the difficulty increased gradually - i guess it's more or less random now?

Thanks to all new comments :)
Anokta : Yes, the random is still more important than the "increasing difficulty" mechanic that I tried to put. Guess I was too tired to make it ok.

Start feeling the need to make a post LD version, more polished and complete. Thank you all !

Enjoyable game. Unfortunately I am blind as a bat when it comes to colors and simply cannot tell some of them apart. Could use a color blind mode.

Cool game. It's pretty addictive. It's hard because the bright colours jump out to you and look more than the others.

good game. timer is too short.

It should be open with few options like
1) play for unlimited time
2) play for 15sec
3) play for 1min
...

Unique idea! It's hard to count all of them of a single look, and it gets easy to fail :D But failure is fast, so it keeps you trying and trying, good work

Pretty cool. Seems like every time I start to get into it, it's over. Think it would be more fun if you got more time added for correct clicks.

For such a simple idea this is actually very fun! I would have liked each level to have its own timer instead. Also, having easier levels in the beginning with less colors would have been nice. I think you could experiment with having clues in the surroundings in the level to aid you in distinguishing the number of colors. Great work!

Hi there. Fun idea, feels a bit like being tested in a psych ward.. er... I imagine... Might be nice to start out with groups of 2 or 3 and then build up. Have you tried it on Corvidae ? Like the visuals and sounds, also like the drop effect on wrong. Good job!

not that i am color blind, but i've got to imagine this isn't too color blind friendly :P i had a tough time noticing a difference in some of the coloring/how many of each, though i guess that is the point

Overall I really enjoyed this game, can easily be ported to any touch device too! I kinda wish there was timer noise or some sort of music that got faster and faster to let me know when time is running out because I'm too fixed on the colors to look away at the clock.

Really challenging game! Specially with lighter colors mixed with brighter colors (i.e.: bright green will always stand out compared to every other color, even if it's not the majority) but that's what makes it so fun!

Well done concept, I hope you continue this post-Compo

Nice addicting game, very hard !
I like the "moving neon square" mood, works pretty well.

Interesting game. The point and time system create a great tension of how long you are willing to wait to work out a puzzle. I'd like to know which was the correct choice if I get it wrong. Also, the abstract nature of the puzzles is a turn off for me, would it be possible to fuse this concept with actual pictures?

This was a really good fun game. Great graphics and game play. My only little frustration was with the count down timer - it stopped me every time I was just getting into it. Perhaps punish a player's mistakes by allowing for X number of mistakes / allow 10-15 sec per level, but reduce that time on the next go if a mistake is made. Just ideas... I really enjoyed this entry - good job!
