Turtles World by Boehrsi

[raw]
made by Boehrsi for LD31 (COMPO)
A small game about a turtle inside an aquarium. You have to feed the turtle. Do it as fast as possible, because the turtle is greedy. The carrots are placed randomly.
If you finished the game, please post your highscore (time needed to finish the game) :).

My first Ludum Dare game. Worked around 15 hours to get the game up and running. Much more was planned but as already mentioned, the time was the problem.

Controls:
Arrow Up: Layer up
Arrow Down: Layer down
Mouse Move: Set direction for movement
Mouse Left: Move turtle to cursor (more clicks, more speed)
Mouse Right: Collect carrots

Used:
- LibGDX
- Box2D
- Photoshop
- Audacity
- Bfxr
- Tiled
- SketchBook (Android)

Planned but not implemented features:
- Emergence to breathe
- Hunt fishes
- More food types, power ups and different things in the different depths
- Ability to dig for special power ups on the bottom layer
- Survival style mode (new food will be dropped randomly, the turtle must take sunbathes, health will be reduced over time if needs aren't fulfilled)
- Polish, polish, polish ...

I didn't finish it, but I got the 3rd layer in 135 seconds, and more clicks than a Diablo runthrough :P

129.67 seconds - My turtle is happy now :)

My left hand hurts like hell though, I had to play it two times as I forgot to write down the highscore the first time.

Shame that you couldn't get to all those planned features, they sound fun.

Well its some kind of game AND finger trainer at once :D. Thought about accepting mouse button holding, but discarded the idea. It's a bit harder this way.

Hand. Hurts.
Nice simple game, I like the idea of layers / visibility. It's a shame you didn't have time to implement those other features :(

188.815 seconds!

Nice to play, I would like the turtle to move faster
maybe it could be nice to see a little bit where the food on the other layers is (it would allow to plan more efficiently the moves)
It's a detail, but I like the "nom" sound :)

137.603. Nice idea, fair execution. Agree that the amount of clicking could have been less.

Playtime: 78.914 (I have a button bound to double click that I just couldn't resist using). That greedy turtle is also a slave driver!

The way it is balanced right now, I think the game focuses more on clicking than moving, and more movement force added per click would help. That way it would focus more on planning and maneuvering rather than button mashing, while still keeping the controls intact. I think the plans you have are great. They would add a layer of complexity so that the game doesn't fall into the trap of the linear "click everything you see, nothing is wrong, fight against time"-style. With a secondary, parallel task, this has the potential to become totally addictive :)

Although there's no music and graphics is rather basic, gameplay is just fun. There was a lot of clicking, but swimming is done really well and layers gave literally more depth to the game:)
Good Job!

@alpha_rat Nice idea with the visibility through layers, if I continue development I think about implementing it.

@little-burrito A double click button is really a help for the game :D. Thanks for the hints, ideas and the feedback. What you say sounds good and I will think about tweaking the game considering your hints.

@iShadow Thank you for your feedback appreciate it :).

The layer thing confused me a bit. Loved the turtle's 'nom' sound.

I liked the choice of theme! I think that the challenges could be more explicit. Congratulations, man!

So much clicks. Also your web link did not work for me, it started but cut out. the download worked fine.

Yes, the click amount should be balanced a little bit better ;). The problem with the web version is strange. Tested it in numerous browsers on different systems, the only requirement is a resolution of 1280x800.

Stange concept. I didn't really get how the gameplay was supposed to work. Good effort nonetheless.

I like the physics of the turtle, but clicking for swimming really doesn't feel like the best way. For example having two keys, one for each left and right paddle, would have been interesting. Or maybe you can think of something else, at least a bit less annoying. Keep up the good work!

Thank you and yes, the controls have to be reworked "a little", thanks for the constructive criticism. :)
