Paleo Yum by zzapp

[raw]
made by zzapp for LD36 (JAM)
Play as a cave man hunting deer in this very barely fleshed out LD game!
There was a billion things we run out of time to do;
such as add audio,
more animals to hunt,
different weapons (Any weapons!)
animations for attacks,
AI for animals so they don't just stand there waiting to become mincemeat.

-- HOW TO PLAY --
WSAD to move, MOUSE to click on buttons
-- GOAL --
Collect TEN food from deer to win.
You can only hold four food at a time so return to the campfire to drop it off!
-- TIPS --
You can run away from combat to heal and recharge stamina at the campfire.

The game has a solid base, it just needs a little bit of tuning to be engaging. Currently, the optimum strategy's pretty straightforward, you fight deer until your health runs low (which happens before the bag fills up), then go to camp to recharge. Perhaps add more options so there's some strategy involved in combat? Create a more complex relationship between the resources (health, stamina, and food) to get the player thinking about how to play your game. There's also a lot of walking right now, which tends to be boring. That being said, you manage to create a unified aesthetic despite your simple graphics, which is impressive. You're really close to having a really fun game on your hands!

We took very similar paths in our game and I think you did better our team in a lot of ways. Well done.

It's definately a great way to learn 3D but as a game I found it boring. The basic mechanic is to go to deer and press "Attack" until it dies. I guess you spend some time for randomizing damage and polishing battle but I think it's impossible to do in ~3 game jam days. The graphics are ok but you shouldn't show player "blue Unity space". How about making fence around the gameplay field with trees and add some more ground and trees behind it to make player feel that world is bigger than he think but he just can't access it. Also player animation of movement is like walking in the air or playing on ice. Moving player is not connected with its animation so it looks kinda funny. Victory animation was great though.
Summary: game lacks of survival and battle strategies and environment design. However I believe it was fun to learn more about 3D so keep going. =)

I second the review of TeslaCool; the game isn't enough challenging. May I give you some suggestions?

- Decrease slowly stamina over-time. Food will increase stamina. So, by doing nothing, you'll essentially starve to death.
- Show the health / stamina on main screen (the 3D view).
- Do an opportunity attack when fleeing (one hit from the deer to the player). Fleeing should be risky.

Also, take a look at the following game, that are using the same gameplay tropes than yours:

- Don't starve (PC, Steam)
- Lost in blue (DS)

Still, keep up the good work, I would not be able to achieve a 3D game in such a short time period!

I liked the art (especially the animation when you win) and the premise, but the game lacked any challenge. Like many of the other comments, you just need to add something to make the player struggle. As it is there is no real way to lose.

Agree with the previous comments, the art is nice, and having the 3d models done and animated must have been time consuming
Great job!!

Nice concept, obviously a lot missing from the final game. Good controls.
