Dungeon of Jest by Ithildin

[raw]
made by Ithildin for LD31 (COMPO)
Objective:
========================
Welcome to the Dungeon of Jest! There's just one room, and the goal is easy as pie. Just go and get the blue orb :D

The connection with the theme may seem a bit loose at first sight. I'll try to explain why I think it's not the case in the forthcoming postmortem that I intend to write tomorrow or during the incoming week.

Controls:
========================
Left-right: Movement
Space: Jump
Up-down: Go up/down ladders
P (in-game): Pause

(Known issue: The M key to mute is not functional although it appears listed in the menu popup)

Dev. tools
===============
>> Haxe (Haxeflixel) on FlashDevelop
>> Photoshop, TexturePacker Essential
>> Tiled
>> Bfxr

//-------------------------------------

EDIT!! I've added a link to the HTML5 version. It's the same, but I've fixed a positioning issue with the popups, so I reckon that technically it does not belong in the compo.

EDIT 2: Replaced Swf download link with a link to the postmortem. If you're interested, get it here: https://db.tt/Um1elMzx

EDIT 6/11/2016: Updated web links

Does it crash? What version of Windows have you got? :S
I've only tried it on my machine (Win8.1, 64b) and it worked fine, so I may need to go through the specifics of how to deploy Windows targets from Haxe.

Just to be sure, I've just re-uploaded the *.7z with the Windows binaries again. If anything, I've removed an old executable labelled as "NewProject" that had been bundled in addition to the final one (LD31.exe), so that's some space saved.

Nice level design! Some parts reminded me of Ninja Turtles for the NES.

I love how I first thought it looked boring and simple, while after taking the first orb immediately found it interesting. Simple and good take on the theme.

Thanks!

That's the effect I wanted to achieve, but I admit that it would have helped a lot having at least twice as many levels.

Nice short game. Plays well and controls well. Art style is decent, but could use some work. The colors on the characters don't really fit the world. The rest of the textures are good. Good implementation of the them into the game. HTML5 version is super awesome.

Nice cape. :) Difficulty is a bit easy for me, but then again I actually finished it which is pretty rare! Nice :)

Cute graphics and a nice idea. I think it actually fits the theme well, as it's always the same screen but with a morphing environment (as evidenced by the character's remarks :D ) If there was a longer version I'd want to play it!

Short but fun! Classic platforming mayhem. Excellent job!

Cool game! Wish it was a little bit longer, but still a good concept!^^

This makes me think of DOS platformers! Nice use of the theme too. I'd love it if your platforming was a little less floaty.

Fun, would have been even better with a backing track.

Nice game :D I like how the level changes :D

I was unimpressed by the first screen, but the dynamic transitions were really cool. The layouts reminded me of a simpler, side scrolling Chips Challenge. I think it would play a lot better with some tweaks to the platforming physics though, namely variable jump height and a tiny bit of momentum in the movement. It feels really stiff and awkward as-is. Still, decent execution and way better than I expected.

Nice game! Interesting way of circumventing having only one game screen.

I liked it. Same as @johnbrynte, the interesting part came after the first orb.

Is there any way to kill the enemies? jumping on them kind of worked only for the first one.

A couple more levels would have been very nice, as you stated above. Very good job! ;)

I love the way the level is regenerated around you when you complete it, and that you start where you completed the level. Fits the theme very well!

Nice concept and execution. The jumping was a little bit floaty. Maybe increase gravity a little? Great job.

Simple little platformer. Solid mechanics.

Good interpretation of the theme. Level advance without change the entire map. The game lack a bit of animations.

It's fun. But the jump is awkward, kind of floaty.

The simple mechanics lend themselves well to a clean game with a clear and interesting use of the theme. I very much liked the focus of the level being 'rebuilt' around the character!

There's a lot of potential for additional mechanics and innovative puzzles, if you ever do choose to expand the game.

First of all: Loved how you kept the HaxeFlixel start screen, not many people give credit to their engines these days :P

I really liked it, thought it was pretty fun. Loved the change-level animations :P Could use some background music, and I think the levels lack a bit of depth. Keep it up!

Thank you all for your comments!
I've taken notice of most of the feedback (particularly about the physics, amount of levels and visual style -well, to name it in some way n_nU) in case I give it a try and expand it (or for future games, of course!).

As for jumping on enemies and not killing them, that's a bug, I'm afraid. I'm bumped into that (pun intended) myself a couple of times :S

Typo at the end: "I'm bumped" should be "I've bumped".

Hi there. Nice presentation, appropriate sounds. Found it tricky after level 3 but I suck at playing platformers. Good job.

Nice idea, the character speech bubbles are funny too. A few more levels would have been great!

Some trouble with controls (Or lag ? I dunno). But nice entry! A little bit to short x) I wanted more! Well made! :)

Nice little game :) Not fan of the physics (jumps), though. Feels more like flying than jumping ;)

Nice start. Wish there was more levels.
gravity is too low I think, also miss some juice to be fully enjoyable.

There's a cool foundation here, and I'd love to see where it could go with more levels that get much more challenging. The jump is a bit too floaty for my tastes, but I enjoyed playing. Nice work!

Great platformer, just needs some music, animations and more levels and this would be a full game!

Excellent game!! A pity is a bit too short. The level warping idea is very clever. Has already many elements that give it more depth than just jumping.

Really nice interpretation of the theme (very similar to mine). However perhaps death could be a bit less painful, e.g. just die from where you start off in that level part.

Instead of going from level to level, you generate a new one over the existing one. Good thinking :)
