DGPOS: Defend the Gun Platforms via One Screen by callumW

[raw]
made by callumW for LD31 (COMPO)
The basic goal of the game is to stay alive as long as possible there is not win condition. The ships will spawn at greater rates as the game goes on. You can build as many gun platforms as you can afford and can fit next to your current platforms.

I used unity to make it as many of us do. The art was made using PyxelEdit and the sound was created using the sfxr program which I found it a nice way to add sound easily .

Instructions:

Defend the gun platforms
Left Click to Fire
Left click on the shop platform on the right to buy more
New platforms cost 100
Right click to place platform
Can only be placed next to other platforms
Will turn green when able to build
Earn 10 bounty by killing the ships
Also gain money over time
Will have to restart if no platforms left

Edit: instructions clarity

Edit 2:

I had similar feelings to a lot of the comments when I submitted this. Therefore I plan on doing some more work on it. Will probably post updates on @WaddellCallum

It's unpolished (no death animations when killing enemies, which takes away from the impact of it, and the UI is somewhat unclear because the turret icon is exactly the same as the actual turret) but I'm digging the idea of having a circular tower defines kind of game. Would love to see that explored further!

Nice concept. Could benefit from an "hold left-click to shoot" feature.

Some variation would be nice, currently it's pretty basic. I liked how you can use the turrets to defend the turrets that have low health though.

Nicely done.
After a while it becomes too easy as enemies are always the same difficulty. But I could see this being loads of fun if there was more enemy variety.

I had fun, simple easy to play game. Sound effects where nice. Would be could with some sort of counter (kills/guns) to give a slight sense of purpose.

Basic implementation of a shooter/tower defense game.
Though i like the idea quite a bit, there are some things you need to work on, like the red shots coming out of nowhere. You can shoot those, but man they are fast. Enemies only have two routes so you can easily build in a way to shoot them as soon as they enter the screen. Gaining money through shooting seems a little bit unlogical but ok, i can get away with it. Unfortunately it leads only to mashing your mouse button.
In general this thing needs some more polishing in terms of gameplay. The concept of the build and expand part is nice though!

I think the idea of this is really good, but the execution is a bit lacking. Presently, all the enemies have such low health that even two or three cannons can kill them really quickly. Also, enemies can attack from the bottom left corner of the screen before you even see them, which is fairly annoying.

Together this adds up to a game where player skill is largely unimportant. For most of the game, clicking in the general direction of enemies is enough to clear them up, and the player only loses when the ships get to be so many that their little tax on the turrets' health bars adds up to more than the money you recieve.

It's a bit of a shame, because you've got a really good idea here. Building a base and defending it from waves of enemies could be tons of fun. More types of enemies and turrets could improve this a bunch, though it would be important not to make these just bigger guns and bigger ships. Having some sort of puzzle in bypassing shields through weird attack angles could make this a really interesting game!

Hi there. Looks good. Tricky to not just die, doesn't seem to be any way to block incoming and they shoot often when offscreen. Sounds work well. Good job!

It is very hard to die, making it a little repetitive and boring after a while.
There was also a couple of stray bullets that didn't seem to have come from an enemy, but I figure those enemies were just far off screen and eventually showed up.
I had a hard time picking up and placing towers.
The amount of money was pretty dark on the background. A lighter font would be good.
