Kaleidoscope by Madball

[raw]
made by Madball for LD31 (COMPO)
A game about coins, enemies, disorientation and symmetry.

Use WASD/Arrow keys to move. Look at the guiding arrows to distinguish up and right. Hover mouse over your score to see your highscores. Press a secret button to skip levels. (Well, it's not really secret, it's hidden in the plain sight.)

Feeling dizzy yet?

(When you complete the game, you can paint tiles white. I spent some time making sure that every single tile is accessible, so I'd like you to at least know about it.)

Loads of fun (and extremely hard)! I do think the difficulty ramp should be adjusted, it starts out really easy (maybe one too many levels without disorientation), and suddenly gets super hard (disorientation and enemies at once).

bravo, beautiful game, the way it changes the walls of the level instead of changing the whole screen fits the theme nicely. However, it's missing a Pause button, or is this also a secret :)

cool little game...I wondered why getting killed gets me to the next level though. I like the direction/orientation flipping..adds more depth to it

The rotating directions mechanic is really interesting, and it makes it incredibly confusing to actually navigate the levels (which look great btw). Thanks for putting in the level skip, I don't think I'd have seen all the levels without it!

Fun easy to understand game. The amount of levels is very nice and the controls feel responsive. Music is a bit repetitious but thematically ok.

Nice game, and it felt a bit easy at first - but the hard difficulty came way too fast. Impossible to play when it changed compass every frame. :S
I do like the animations and idea though. The game also works quite well in terms of functionality.

Nice game. Quite simple and effective.

Clever idea. I'd love to see specific levels set out for this rather than random generation (don't know how much of this is random, but there is a bit) so I could try a speedrun ;)

Really awesome idea :D Really cool level changing animation and the decent use of color. Love these changing directions, confuses me a lot, but is very much fun to play. Have never seen a game like this before.

Cool game! Thought it looked quite simple at first and I had no idea what was happening - though after a few rounds it grew potentially, when gravity started to turn the game was both extremely fun and hard. Great job and Merry Christmas!

I'm really digging the concept! I have to admit at first I was just thinking "meh" that it was only a collect-stuff-avoid-other-stuff game, but when you switched up the controls I actually fell in love a little. <3 Great work on a really fun game!

Insane controls and great fun. Some times it was just impossible to get my head around how to get from where I was to where I wanted to go and then when they all started spinning as well... oh so hard. Hard, but fun.

I think the game would benefit from more psychedelic effects, e.g. have the painting you do on the background work not directly on the seen background but as it would if seen through a rotating kaleidoscope.

It was a little too much trying to keep an eye on the lower right corner so maybe add an up direction arrow at the center of the screen.

Though nice that the enemies pushed you forward to the next level and that time's up didn't punish you more directly was a bit confusing, maybe better to have enemies spin the world orientation or something...

Great and well worked game. Had loads of fun playing.

Your game is really enjoyable. Saw it first on @TimTipGames stream and didn't expect it to be that hard, but after te first levels I found myself tilting my head in weird angles trying to figure out how to control the "character". And when the controls started rotating too.. woah!
Graphics and sound are good too, simple but with very good taste.
Great compo entry :)

Simple idea that is well executed. Fun, but as others have said, the difficulty curve is pretty tough.

I had fun going through the levels, and I do appreciate that death simply moved the game onto the next level. When the game was over though it just displayed the title screen again, I wish I'd gotten a look at my time/score instead.

That is a great effect, having the black lines rearrange every level, and the variations they make are cool. They make navigating the level fun even without obstacles. And I like the way the background becomes more colorful as you play. Impressive game!!

Interesting concept. I liked the way how walls change their position. And yes, I'm feeling a bit dizzy now. ))

A-maze-ing! Lots of fun, I really loved that the player ends up creating quite an elaborate background just through playing. The spinning direction change thing was unique and quite fun. Personally I enjoyed the levels without the red hazards, and just running around collecting stuff without too much worry. I thought it was an interesting choice that failing puts you to the next level, I liked that in that it was unique and lets you move on rather than getting stuck. Great work for 48 hours!

It took me a little while to figure out what you were doping with my controls, but once I did, this was great. Ingenious little gimmick, with some graphical polishing and some more variety in the (already good) music, this could be something really good. Seems like it would do well as a web game (as it already is)

Loved the painting mechanic, and the directional movement. Collisions weren't half bad either. Very fun, worth polishing. :)

Great game. It turned out very hard!
Well done. Best part is the level changes. They look really nice.
The difficulty level doesn't increase constantly, though. For example, in the first level you have enemies and in the second, you don't. Maybe switch the order?
