Super Action Man by TeamQuadratic

[raw]
made by TeamQuadratic for LD31 (JAM)
Coming soon to a theater near you - Super Action Man! Follow the epic story of Sam as he battles the forces of evil on a motorcycle, battles the forces of evil on a train, battles the forces of evil on a building, and has a conversation with his girlfriend. Featuring voice acting by legendary actors such as some-guy-that-kind-of-sounds-like-Schwarzenegger and the-generic-villain-guy. Be sure to buy your ticket now - they won't be around for long!

Controls: Arrow Keys and Space for all levels

Gameplay:
Level 1: Shoot cars to destroy them. Each one will take 2 hits. After defeating enough you can move on.
Level 2: Make a dramatic choice at the end of the conversation, ultimately affecting the plot in absolutely no way!
Level 3: Duck underneath the quick moving obstacles and bullets. While ducking you can't shoot. Kill both enemies to move on. Note: Colliding bullets destroy each other.
Level 4: Hit the lit up arrow keys before the timer runs out! But be careful not to wait too long or hit the wrong ones!

I anticipate we may get downvoted a bit for our theme interpretation, especially since some of the levels scroll. We chose to interpret the theme as a movie screen, and we're happy with how that effect came out. We sincerely hope you have fun and enjoy our humor. We've learned a ton of lessons as usual and we will keep on improving in the future! Thanks for playing.

As fun as this game was, I found that there were a few features that could've made the game a lot better like maybe a scoring system or more variation in the enemies. I do have to commend you on the music and voice acting at the end. I also liked the gameover screen. In regards to graphics, I thought the title screen looked pretty good but the actual game itself had some pretty mediocre graphics.

I blew up a bunch of cars, but then they just stopped spawning and I couldn't progress.

@kirbytails7 Hmmm... that's strange. After destroying enough (I think about 16) it should automatically open a choice selection at the top of the screen. After you select your choice it should go to the next level. I'm not sure why you're having that problem.

For some reason on the first two attempts I couldn't get through level 1. Eventually the cars just stopped coming and I was driving down the road forever. Anyway, good overall, and impressive to have so many levels given the time limit of LD.

Alright, I may have identified the possible cause of the issue. Made a very minor fix and currently uploading the new one. Hopefully that helps.

Nivce start. And theme integration is good. But really needs more to make the player feel that they are progressing. Scores, levels, different baddies/scenery? After about 10 cars I just get road. Keep going. I'd love to see what's next

@davient Did you also get an issue where the enemies stopped coming on the first level? I'll look into that again. What's supposed to happen is that you move onto the next level after beating 16 cars.

The first level could've been more clear on how you beat it, maybe a counter out of sixteen (I know it's in the description but I didn't read it until after I was confused for a while, I was just dodging them, maybe it's just me). Also the game did this weird thing where it opened up, crashed, and then re-opened itself, it worked fine after that though. The game was really funny though, I had a huge grin during each cutscene, the gameplay isn't all that deep, but the humor MORE than makes up for it. The last level was also pretty interesting, especially when it sped up toward the end. I really like it.

Great fun. Solid humor. Hitboxes on the train level were a little tough sometimes. I found myself getting hit b/c I stood up too early, when I thought it had already passed me. Overall I enjoyed the game quite a bit.

@ChezPain Thanks for the feedback! I just finished a simple counter of enemies remaining on the first level and am now uploading it. A few of the comments on the game seem to suggest that people may be quickly trying the first level and quitting before seeing the rest of the game.

The train part was really hard! Also took me a little while to realize the pillars moving by hurt you. The crouch animation was super nice, and I enjoyed the creativity in the final battle's mechanics. :)

Man, I never confirmed dinner, now I don't know what to do with my life. I also really like that dude's beard, I think he was cool, why did he haf to die.

On a more somber note, great job with this game. The mechanics were sloppy, but silly enough that it didn't matter much. I had no idea that things in the second level were killing me until you pointed it out, and the cars in the first level acted more like Medusa heads than cars, but that don't matta. I was enjoying every moment. Nominations for best voice acting, and best story.

Pretty interesting (if somewhat loose) interpretation of the theme. I liked the variety between each level and the dialogue was actually pretty funny (and wonderfully corny at the same time).

First stage feels a little like spy hunter. The game is humorous and fun, but why do the guns shoot black squares?
Overall, nice work.

Found it funny. Pam's voice acting is absolute gold. This was quite ambitious for a Ludum Dare game, so good job. I think you guys weared yourselves thin, however, in focusing on multiple minigames at once.

Haha, best game eva! I thought it was a good interpretation of the theme, so way to go there. Voice acting and a lot of humor to boot. Even if the gameplay wasn't that involved, there was definitely some challenge there and the story elements kept me going. Nicely done!
