I've Never Seen Snow by hogtrick

[raw]
made by hogtrick for LD31 (JAM)
Controls:
W A S D to move
Attack change direction
I J K L to attack(You can keept it pressed to attack faster)

We made the game in about 20 hours of development, me as a programmer and my wife asthe pixel artist.
We would loved to make more graphics and to program more systems, like feedback do damage, and upgrades, but the time was short and for a game like this we need to test too much, to make everything balanced, not to easy or hard etc

About the game:

This is a game about Christmas in Brazil.
We live in Brazil and grew up being encouraged to love and live with characters and situations that involve Christmas that are not ours!
Here in Brazil in December, all the big shops, streets and houses mimic a fake snow in the midst of a temperature of 40 degrees.
We celebrate a date that doesn't make sense for us and we call it tradition, this game shows the exhaustion of a child who doesn't understand why need to want things for Christmas and doesn't even understand where it's coming from the snow, because she never saw ...
at the same time she doesn't understand why her parents who are poor try to buy as much useless things that can in December.

Silly little game that I had fun playing. The controls were really bad at first, but once I got used to them I enjoyed the game. ☃☃☃

I saw the Monica's rabbit as a weapon. Heheheheh.
The criticism about christmas in Brazil is good. The game can be improved if the controls actually works more like Binding of Isaac. It's look right now like the controls of a first person shooter.

A game about questioning what the true meaning of Christmas is, in a twin stick style.

You should have had somewhere in the game to read the controls. Other than that, it's fun

Nice little game, the controls took some time to get used to and restarting could have used a button instead of having to click, but otherwise this was pretty fun. Perhaps her attack could have had larger sprite as it wasn't very clear at first how far her range is.

I would've liked a bit more feedback on the damage you make and take. Now it was quite ambiguous as to when I hurt the enemy and when they hurt me. The attacking system was a cool change to the usual and the graphics were nice!

Adorable! I don't really mind the controls, I think it's okay. And I especially love the story behind the game.

Nice little game. An interesting way to see christmas. For some reason I neither could play nor download the game in firefox. In chrome it worked just fine.

Nice entry!

As a Brazilian myself, I understand this sentiment. I have 24 years old and have never seen snow.

It made me remember a while back when I used to live by the beach and people would dress like it was snowing for christmas related stuff. Just to go back to "normal" clothing as soon as the holiday ended. Which in a way made sense because the weather was really warm to begin with. Kind of a weird behavior.

On a more game design related note. The game could certainly benefit from a more varied arrange of enemy behaviors and/or player attacks. It would also be good for the hitbox to be smaller than the character(as in most shooters), that way you don't get hit by bullets that literally disappear in the air.
