Farming Sim BC by asteryz

[raw]
made by asteryz for LD36 (JAM)
Warning: contains pixel nudity

The theme for ludum dare 36 was ancient technology, so I decided to make a game about one of the first farmers!

Controls are customisable but defaults are:
Space - Use item
Shift - Cuss at weeds
Ctrl - drop/pickup item

Tools used: Unity, Audacity, lmms & Gimp.

The music feels like it is slowly boring a hole into my brain.

I do love a dedicated swear button though.

I was a big unsure of the ultimate goal of the game but I think the overall farming mechanics were well implemented with a nice variety of tools and interactions. The art could use a bit more work (besides the player model, that one is perfect). Love that there's a swear button too! Cool game.

Nice one, good job. BTW was there a economic aspect to it that I missed?

Wow, that's not what I expected, I don't know what the goal is but it's fun to cuss at plants

@Sina There were plans for an economic aspect but there is only so much free time in a weekend. ;)

Was a little frustrated at first trying to pick up tools and missing or dropping the tool when trying to use it, but the cursing mechanic made it worth it in the end.

This was actually really cool. I don't really know what I was meant to be doing but it was quite fun to just wander around and play with stuff. The mechanics were good and it took a second to get used to where the character should be for it to affect each tile but once you had that it was easy. It would have been nice to have some sort of guide to tell you what each tool did in relation to the actual farming such as a tutorial at the beginning or something but I realise that it could be quite difficult in the short space of time. With some more work I think this could be a quite fun game, especially if there was a good goal to work towards. The music is quite peaceful and matched the game well which was nice. The cussing at plants bit was strangely fun. Look through the other comments you mentioned about trying to get an economic aspect into the game which I think would have made it better but I understand the time restrictions of a weekend. All round a good start to a game.

LOL, this is how I imagine all the old bearded dudes at farmers markets to do their job. It would be really cool to have like a storage house or something to keep track of how many crops we have. Maybe a hunger feature would be cool to? Good job!

cool game, quite straighforward take of the theme, but with goofy twist, love it

the control quite smooth and responsive, the art somewhat not match with each other, the player pixelatd, yet trees and the watery-ground not, my suggestion is try to make the art have the same style overall
also the "collision" of the player and the soil tile a bit finicky

Nice little simulator, and the art looks pretty good. Love that there's a swear button.

Think it would have been helpful with a little bit more instruction on the order of operations to grow plants. Just a little drawing on the side of a dude going from axe to shovel to hoe to seed to water woulda been really helpful.

Not sure if I missed more than just growing some plants and taking care of weeds, but this does feel like a good foundation for a more complex game involving selling crops and buying upgrades. Good work for a jam!

Bit hard to tell what can interact with what. If you highlight items/squares with what actions are available that could go a long way.

Hi, nice game and congratulations ! We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #36. We made the same thing at the previous jam.

Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description.

Quite a relaxing game about farming :) I really liked the artstyle! It was really well made, though I suppose the game did lack any specific goal.
