Silverwarrior by jangler

[raw]
made by jangler for LD31 (COMPO)
Six hours to go, but I can't think of anything to add, so here it is!
Made entirely from scratch in C/SDL2 using the GNU toolchain and a slightly modified version of the vis text editor. Graphics made in Aseprite. Music and sound effects made in Schism Tracker using Roland CR-78 samples (found online) and Casio VL-1 samples (recorded myself).

The Windows executable is 32-bit and should run on either i686 or x86-64 architectures.

The Linux executable is 64-bit and does not include shared libraries. You'll need to have your distribution's packages for SDL2, SDL2_image, and SDL2_mixer installed to run it.

The README.txt is reproduced below.

Very polished! Fun gameplay, good audio, good graphics.
You also get an extra score from me for having coded it from scratch with C and SDL2 :)

Obstacles falling from the sky, an obscure purple (at least I think it's purple, I'm colorblind) guy being chased by purple scorpions (again, I think It's purple).

Awesome job on the graphics and audio, for 48 hours work this is awesome.

Really awesome game. =)

Fun little game! The movement is a bit slow though. I also couldn't figure out how to use the bombs, S D and F never did anything.

I can only get to Fork Fighter, the controls feel a bit awkward, but I love it. The art is great, the music is cute.

Very nice entry, one of the best one i've tried so far. It's simple and looks finished from all sides: design, gameplay, graphics and audio. Good stuff!

Excellent feel to the game, really well done. Could see it being a great foundation for a local-multiplayer arena or the like. Dug the sound track.
Very curious theme too... throwing silverware at scorpions! :D

This game feels very finished. Awesome that it was done for 48 hour compo too! I don't think I have ever played a game where I had to get a single use weapon every time I wanted to fight back. Pretty cool mechanic. This really made me have to work to destroy the enemies instead of just blast them or jump on them or something. Instead I was navigating around the enemies trying to grab the fork and then making sure not to waste it by missing. The multiplier and throwing multiple utensils was pretty cool, but I wish it was based on number of uses instead of on a timer, like I get one or two good uses of it when I want, rather than have a time limit on using it, mostly because it still consumes your utensils and it was hard to get it where I had enough utensils, enough time, and enough monsters around to make it worth it. I was also a little bit confused why some guys didn't die in one hit. I think it had to do with the different types of utensils, which is what the shifting them was for, but I couldn't figure out the difference between which badguys required spoons and which ones needed knives (I thought they were all just purple scorpions). Fullscreen mode redrew the screen without the floor tiles for some reason. Great music and art too btw!

Thanks for the in-depth feedback! I had wondered if people would figure out the utensils. I intentionally left them unexplained. Forks and knives are deadly, and knives can pass through and hit multiple enemies, but spoons are inert (unless you have a certain power-up).

Interesting game, good audio, graphics and the engine run well.
Moving blocks to make the level is interesting and respect the theme.

So, well done!
