Survive the Night by conradte3

made by conradte3 for LD31 (JAM)
Survive the Night is a survival game using one screen. You slowly discover the area by fueling your fire, which is your only source of warmth in an extremely cold environment.

EDIT: Sorry guys, there should have been some extra/clearer messages in there. Logs cannot be picked up until they are chopped (by pressing F on them after picking up the ax).

Fixes: Second message now correctly says "sticks" instead of "things". Log collision mask corrected. "Activate log" message now displays at the correct time. Fire can no longer be accidentally "lit" if it is already lit. (I felt that these were in line with the allowed changes but if you feel otherwise, let me know and I can revert them.)

I really liked the mood of this game. Controls are a bit wonky, but the visuals and audio are great.

Nice game, I Actually stuck around until the day saved me. The concept works well and the mood and tension are nicely set. Good job

i was confused about the controls, i missed the R to light the fire message and it seemed I couldn't pick up the logs even though there was a carrying count in the top next to the sticks. could use a little bit of velocity to the character movement. good job

Good Concept, Boringish Gameplay. Sorry mate.

A little clunky, I think the collision could have been improved. I'm not sure if there were any logs to get picked up, but I never was able to find any that I could use (despite the logs around the area).

Otherwise, the controls were intuitive enough to figure out without much, but I'm glad you had instructions that "e" picked up and dropped sticks.

Really nice atmosphere. It reminded me of "Don't Starve" at the beginning, but very soon got it's own character. The music and wind sounds add greatly to it. Being able to change the resolution is great for a LD game.

I did get the "Hope I don't end up like him"-message too early in my first start. What could I have used the axe for? I tried holding 'F' in front of trees or branches, but it didn't seem to do anything. It shouldn't be possible to accidentally reduce the fire size by pressing 'R'.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! I fixed some of the small things you guys mentioned and attempted to clear up the confusion with logs in the description. I realize it's a bit clunky, didn't have time to fix things up but I'm glad you liked the mood :)

Btw. %HOMEPATH%\[Gamename]\ is a bad place to install a game.

The controls bother me some how. . . but other than that your game looks and sounds well :)

I really liked the game at first, but controls are awful and I wasn't able to pick the axe

I wanted to like this game and the idea of staying war in the night, but I could not handle the controls

Thank you for all the feedback. Really sorry about the controls, I wish I had had more time to fix up the game but it was struggle even to get it to this point with the time I had. It will be the first thing I try to improve when I continue working on it. If you could leave specific feedback on how you would prefer the controls I would appreciate it. Thanks again!
