BOLYGOK by Chaoslab

[raw]
made by Chaoslab for LD30 (JAM)
Bolygok! A Psychedelic Text Adventure with some Art and Music too boot! Save the accidentally gravity field connected planets in the solar system from potential disaster.

The game is a Java Application so you will need java to run it. (Just java not the browser plugin)

Sorry that it is a bit small and odd but it is an entry none the less. Hope you enjoy it.

Two music tracks in .OGG to listen too.

Stoked! :-)

What version of Java do I need?

Unfortunately, I couldn't get the game to start. I can hear the music, but it just opens a window with a blank white screen.

There are some issues with it. Debugging and will post a comment when fixed version is uploaded.

I have fixed it. Did not even need a recompile was just a config file that needed correcting. Drop box updated. Enjoy!

(There are no sprite lists or sound effects so those errors can be ignored).

Old-fashioned game :) I liked the graphics, they make you feel like the adventure but the bubbles can bother after some time. Maybe a mysterious music help to get in the mood

I finished it right up to a point and got stuck. I can't seem to do anything with the chest in the attic. Unless I need another item, in which case I have no idea where to get that item.

Props for hand-drawn graphics, and the audio.

You do need the "green key" item, try examining at each location!

I love the art and music! I just let the game run in the background for a little while just to hear that main track while browsing the web. The gameplay took me back a ways to my old Apple II+. Thanks for that!

Cool concept, but it seems to me like I should be able to use the green key to open the green door, but I could not. Maybe I missed something.

Thanks disease. The lock picks are required for the green door. :-)

This game reminds me so much of Myst! You've captured the feel of those games perfectly. I loved exploring and looking for items!

I liked the music, but the UI could use a bit of cleaning up. The disappearing/appearing navigation buttons were jarring, would have been better to just always have them visible, but maybe visually indicate that they are unavailable at a given time.

After peeking through the XML files, I figured out where the lock picks were, but I don't know what to do with the quantum rod.

@rustybroomhandle - You are welcome and thanks.

@ninjascript - Thanks, that is exactly what I was aiming for.

@ericdpitts - Critique noted, thanks. Not be too hard to made the buttons translucent and inactive when not an option.

@Dietrich. Nice one on looking at the .adven.xml (my adventure XML format). Hint: The quantum rod is used at a location too fix something (do not want to spoil it).

Ooh! Lots of bubbles!
I feel lost navigating through the game. Just going north, south, east and west isn't too informative and I often go the wrong way. Which is troublesome considering there are one way paths. :/ Nice game overall. Managed to finish it!

@LudusPactum - Thanks. Enjoyed making the music.

@TehSkull - Thanks. Used water soluble pencils for the art.

Always liked this type of games. Remember cobra's arc snatcher or policenauts, by example.

I'm normally not a huge fan of text games, but this one actually held my attention for a while. Maybe it was the hypnotic particle effect thing? I did get lost a bit, and being teleported didn't help with that. I would love some kind of graphical map of explored areas. Also more work on the soundscape could really enhance the feel of this game. Overall, I really enjoyed it, despite what I was expecting to think. Good job.

Solid entry, I guess some scientists would point out a few inaccuracies here and there, but that would not be the first time a video game doesn't exactly scientific terms where they belong. ^^"

Aside from that, interface felt a bit clunky, though I guess it's understandable in that timespan (writing interfaces can really take much time); one thing I'd personally like to have is having North/South/West/East buttons arranged as directions they correspond to (North at the top, South at the bottom, West to the left, East to the right); that would make travelling more intuitive. ^^"

Bolyg贸k? :D What a coincidence ;) Did you actually make the art with crayons and then scan it? Because it looks just like that! Nice, fitting music as well. Great job!

@Cudabear - Thanks. I wanted to create that feeling. :-)

@rustybroomhandle - Thank you for the encouragement.

@eruiz00 - Thanks. Remember "Island of Secrets" by any chance?

@Sunflower - Thanks for the critiques (gui code is always fun). Yes it is not exactly scientifically correct (also meant to be in the future).

@hungyg - Thanks. Bolygok is Hungerian for Planets. Yes the art is hand drawn and scanned. Color pencils (some being water soluble for that water color effect)

I can't download this entry - Chrome states that it's malicious and blocks the download. (I haven't had this problem with any other Ludum Dare entries, or java or zip files.)

@Borgi - Thanks, used to have a copy of "Write your own adventure programs".

@Dry Tree - I had no problems using chrome, so not sure why it is not working for you (maybe try another browser?).

@hbocao - Thanks for the compliments.

At this point I am considering doing a similar but larger adventure game with player progress load / save (multi level / zone), more polish, more visuals and more music for the October write a game and sell it for a $1 compo.

What do you ladies and gents think of the idea? :-)

Definitely interested in what of "Ludumites" think of
