Captain Yods by captainyods

[raw]
made by captainyods for LD36 (JAM)
This game was made for the Ludum Dare 36 Jam, the theme was Ancient Technology.
Controls:
W/A/S/D - Movement
Left Mouse Button - Fire Weapon
Mouse Wheel Up/Down - Swap Weapon
H - Use Concentrated Aloe Vera (Potion)
F - Enter/Exit Fullscreen

Due to running out of time the story was cut. Here is a basic overview:
The protagonist is a mercenary hired by a village to find and destroy a great, and powerful weapon (The ballista). After receiving a suggestion from a villager he heads to the Eastern Forest to search. The protagonist will then find The Grove of The Great Boar (First Boss) and proceed to kill it. Then heading North of the village the protagonist will find and destroy the Ballista.

This is my first game jam and also one of my first games. Prior to LD 36 I had just under 2 weeks experience making games, but decided to give this a go. It is no work of art nor is it well balanced but at least I got the experience and knowledge from this.

I beat it! Nothing happened.

Fun little romp. Couple of issues, nothing gamebreaking. Exiting potion shop from second stage teleports you back to the village, and either enemy health bars are seriously bugged or I have no idea how armored enemies work. You can hit armored enemies for ages before it shows in the health bar, hit location doesn't seem to matter.

Audio feedback would've been appreciated, especially hit and death sounds for different enemies and player itself.

Crossbow is OP.

Congratulations on your first LD, pretty neat game. Weapons could use some more balancing, for example there was no need to ever use spear, range weapons can deal damage from far and they deal even more damage. Would be cool if spear is better against enemies X, but for enemies Y it's better to use crossbow etc. Anyway solid game, especially for your first LD, good job!

I was surprised at hour fun this was for such a small amount of experience! Dodging the enemy bullets and returning fire was quite enjoyable, though the ballista got me after I'd killed so many of its allies. Good job!

This is a pretty cool little rpg! I liked how there was quite a variety of zones - it certainly made it more interesting. I couldn't get past the ballista - it completely destroyed me.

It could certainly do with some sound, but I'm sure you knew that already.

Graphics could obviously be upgraded, but they certainly worked well enough as to not detract from my enjoyment of the game.

I did find two glitches:
- Exiting the shop in the desert sends you back to the main village (I don't know if this is intentional)
- The crossbow enemies could go offscreen, (like, where you couldn't move) and then it was pretty hard to kill them (although I think normally they came back onscreen if you moved away...)

Also, for some reason it seems like I could only buy the aloe vera if I had the bow equipped. I'm not sure what the intended behavior is here...?

But as a first entry, it's definitely pretty good - and although it's a bit bland, it's not a bad game.
