Bunker Down by JuiceBox Entertainment

[raw]
made by JuiceBox Entertainment for LD29 (JAM)
Requires Java to run.

Bunker Down is a game where you must dig below the surface of a post-apocalyptic environment and build defenses in order to protect yourself from the storm of nuclear missiles headed your way.

Controls:
- Arrow Keys to move
- Left click to dig away dirt blocks or place objects such as walls and ladders.
- Right click on edge of screen (bottom and top) to scroll up and down.
- Middle click to deselect a currently selected building block.

Instructions:
- Avoid getting hit by bombs, place blocks of different materials to absorb the impact from bombs.
- As time goes on, the drop rate, damage, and radius of the bombs/missiles will increase.
- [Front] walls must be placed adjacently to back-walls of the same material.
- Buy and place ladders to climb up and down.
- Stone, Iron, Silver and Gold have increasingly higher amounts of resistance vs bombs (in that order).
- Purchase a pickaxe in order to mine iron.
- Purchase a drill in order to mine silver and gold.

Things we weren't able to get to or complete:
- Sound / Music
- Game Over Screen
- Several Animations (Digging, Death, etc.)
- Fix some bugs (walking across the air, untuned movement, game over buttons misaligned/off-screen...)
- Some optimizations (Automatic scrolling, missile warning alerts, placing ladders and digging with key press instead of mouse click, ...)

We learned a lot and had a lot of fun, and hope you enjoy! Thanks for playing! =]

Very neat idea, and I really like the concept.
But there isn't enough stone to purchase the pickaxe!
a simple music with some sound effects would have made this a great demo.
Anyway, great job on innovation. Seems like it will be a really fun game if you finish it.

Not much to do and it crashed on me after a while. It shows some promise, though. Like a simple little puzzle Tararia... or something :)

Thanks for the comments so far guys, we'll definitely keep on working on and improving the game, although I don't think we can upload it here anymore.

@Katamori, make sure you're using the mouse to dig, also you can only gather stone if you haven't purchased the pickaxe or drill yet.

@Woo Sang Hwang, thanks for your comments! There's a small chance that the map could have spawned with too-little resources, as we don't guarantee any specific amount. There's also the fact that the bombs will destroy resources as well. Did you remember to scroll the map downwards?

Really liked the art style. I think it would have helped if Alex could break a block by walking into it instead of having to click, walk, click, walk...

With a little more progress, this could be a very interesting game. Great to hear that you will go further with Alex the robot. Thank you for that game.

It crashed while I was playing, but it's a really good entry. Awesome job in such a short time, and nice art. Congrats!

Nice graphics, but the controls seem a little janky. It's strange but in a weird coincidence this is almost identical in concept to another game I've rated! I guess the idea of mining into the surface was a pretty common one this time around.

This game seems surprisingly familiar! It's interesting to see that given such a vague theme multiple people have come up with similar concepts. The two things that I ran into when playing the game were that sometimes you can have too few resources to get to the pick or drill, and that when the bombs only destroy tiles below them then there's not much point doing anything except mining out all the tiles and building a ladder and a pillar next to it of walls out of all your materials, and then hiding under it at the bottom. The graphics were nice looking, and the need to build ladders made the digging more interesting. It may have been nice to have some sort of goal in mind other than surviving.

Simple, but fun, and great grapics.

The only 'buts' it it's froze at first when Alex died, I couldn't reprocude that tho.

Thanks for the supportive and helpful comments thus far, it means a lot!

There are some known bugs that will be worked out eventually (several of which we've already squashed).

The controls will definitely be improved, we realize how slow and awkward it can be at times, and our aim is to make them intuitive and responsive. Placing ladders and digging will likely be moved to key presses instead of clicks, as well.

The building aspect of the game is something that we really need to work on and reinforce. We realize there isn't much need or complexity for it atm, but we're toying around with a few ideas to encourage construction in different ways.

The explosions of the bombs were also not meant to straight-down only, they were meant to be radial, however some issues arose with deciding how a block absorbs part of the explosion at an angle; so, we chose to do it this way for now. We will likely change the explosion shapes to be sideways, or plus-shaped (bomberman style) or a combination of all.

Nice graphics and a potentially good concept. BUT in the first 3 tries there wasn't enough stone to progress further and when I finally got 10 the game crashed and I gave up. Also I have no idea what the walls are for, I thought they'll protect me from bombs but they didn't :(
