The Outsider by Cake_Catastrophe

[raw]
made by Cake_Catastrophe for LD35 (COMPO)
Fly around the inside of a shape-shifting tesseract which is procedurally generated around you in real time and populated by cube-y monster.

It's sort of like flying the spaceship from Descent around the set of the film Cube.

NOTE: For fullscreen standalone version, set resolution to desktop resolution or UI will break.

HINTS:
- Follow the objective marker! This may not be clear, but that's what you're meant to do. Of course, sometimes the dungeon layout doesn't make it easy.
- Flying back and forth between rooms will cause the rooms to re-roll their exits. Sometimes you may get stuck and need to backtrack a little.
- You can dash in any direction using the right mouse button while moving
- The dash also has a bonus feature - for a few frames right in the middle of the dash (around half-way on the bar!) you actually absorb damage. This is the only way to heal and can allow you to recover from bad situations if done right.
- You can finish the dungeon as soon as you have destroy 1 core (objective marker!). When you destroy a core, all other enemies in the room also die so go all out on them!
- If you can destroy 3 cores before leaving however, there's a secret section!
- The game may be ungodly hard because I have played it too much over the last 48hrs that I can no longer gauge the difficulty.
- Oh there's a deadly wall of deadly fire that acts as a time limit. If you see it, you're probably going the wrong way.

KNOWN ISSUES:
- UI: If you're playing the download version full screen, be sure to set it to the native resolution of your monitor otherwise the GUI goes nuts. I think it's a unity bug? At any rate I couldn't fix it.
- It's possible to get stuck! Sorry. Sometimes something goes a bit funny - I think it's to do with what room the game thinks your in being wrong. Anyway, it's not frequent, but common enough that I'm sure people will get it and be sad. I meant to fix this or at least botch in something so the rooms re-roll their exits if you've been in them too long (ie, most likely stuck) but I'm tired and I want to sleep now.
- The game is probably too hard?

Look, I drew a spaceship!

Everything was off center for me (cursor, health bar). The graphics are cool.

Took some minutes to load, but very different game, in the gameplay and also in the art, nice job.

That was pretty awesome. Controls work quite well, but I wish the boost was a bit more substantial. Nobody does cel-shaded graphics anymore so that was really refreshing. I like the overall backstory/concept behind the game also. Might have actually been better without music? The whole experience felt pretty lonely and mysterious and I felt the music may have failed to capitalize on that.

Great work!

Looks good! Got a lot done for the compo. The boost could last a little longer, or be faster.

Good concept. With a bit more art and mechanics added, this could be a really great game. Good work :)

Nice aesthetic. Nice mood. It could be better with a gameplay more frenetic - something like a FPS, but overall I like it ++

I really like the tesseract idea! The fact that there was no concept of "down" really made the level feel alien. Whether intended or not, that was pretty cool.

Nice game, wonderful artstyle. Would be great if I could pause or mute it tho.

I wasn't able to play the game - it just crashes when I run it through wine, and the web player doesn't work on linux! Sorry! (Maybe use an OpenGL export?)

Cool concept! Navigating the maze with the explanation makes sense but it would be nice if that stuff were easier to figure out in-game. (like the firewall killing you, I wasn't sure what was happening the first time that killed me) This could definitely be cool with some tweaks. Nice work.

Hi, nice game ! We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #35.
Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description
