The Follower by Christina Antoinette Neofotistou

Populous, Terraria, From Dust, Dungeon Keeper, Diggers 2: Extractors. If you know all these games, then you know what this is about.

The time is The Stone Age! You are a deity, with powers beyond comprehension, but these days people are sparse. You only get one Follower, Tanri.

You two need to work together to make it.
Controls: WASD keys and mouse

WHAT'S IN THE GAME ***********************

A full terraria-like engine to handle terrain.
A sandbox tutorial level.

Your follower can eat, dig, and pray to create mana. You can create earth to build stuff, by using up "Matter" or by using up "Mana". Matter is the earth you've already dug up. Mana comes from making Tanri pray at the altar. If you have no matter, mana will be used instead, but matter will always be used first.

When you're building, beware of earthquakes, single earth tiles come crashing down.

WHAT IS PLANNED ***********

- animation and eyecandy ( I restrained myself this time! )
- claim the wheat and the altar, so they can produce food and mana even when you're not there. When you *are* there of course, your production doubles.
- build new rooms
- give Tanri some more AI. Choosing what tiles to dig has already been more difficult than I anticipated, and it isn't working 100%. I'd like her to have some more agency, climb single steps on her own, and if she has no orders, try to go and feed herself, or pray.
- Battles with dinos, turn-based
- If your one follower dies, and you have the mana, you can reincarnate her, instead of losing all your stats.

UPDATES:
27 Dec 2013: made a lava engine which can create ground tiles.

Nice art. Refers to Populous game series.

Nice game, the animation stopped sometimes on the follower but its a nice take on the theme.
Good job with the mechanics although the follower dies of hunger really easy.

Neat! I found it a bit hard to play - the dialogs often seemed to disappear before I could read them and my follower died of hunger often. Love the style though, would love to see more of it!

Graphics are really nice, but didn't really get what to do beyond eating and praying.

Nice art, though I couldn't figure out what to do after the tutorial so I built myself a little house around the food dispenser.

Don't know why that sent.. anyway, lovely colours, I really do love all the graphics. I wonder if you'll flesh this out more, it's a fantastic start.

I didn't really get what I was supposed to do... I found it too easy to get Tanri stuck in a lot of weird places, and my screen for some reason wouldn't stop shaking. (I could fix it by clicking Center Follower.) Tanri seemed like she got hungry WAY too fast. Really liked the audio and graphics, though. Looks like it has a ton of potential.

Love the idea, but not enough gameplay right now. Just adding something to mine underground would be enough. That said, this genre is ambitious for a 48H game, but the current stuff is well done.

Little bug report: got a permanent earthquake because I did something with UI during one.

This is absolutely amazing. As a die-hard Populous fan, I am always on the lookout for games with tribal and Shaman-istic themes. I gotta say there are heartbreakingly few, but playing this really filled me with hope. You haven't done much size-wise, but content-wise it's all there; the mana, the food, you being God and supporting your one faithful Shaman as she tries to start afresh.
I can't even begin to imagine how amazing this could be with a bigger team and more time; putting more focus in simulation+exploration+survival is a combo just too could to be true.
Damn, I don't even care about LudumDare anymore. I just want to see this game succeed and want you to know you have my full support.
The sprite-art is gorgeous, could use more depth/contrast with the colours.
The UI is wonderful, tutorial was super easy to understand. Seeing the bread and mana swirls pop up and float above the object you are "harvesting" is both pretty and emphasises the point.
Clicking and dragging works smoothly with the keyboard and mouse combo.
My main gripe is that the earthquake is glitchy as hell, but for the time you had I'm blown away.

As I was saying before, I would do anything to make this game become a fully-fleshed out reality that all us Populous and tribal fans so desperately need in this current generation.

Good start to what could be a massive game. Tough to keep hold of your follower when trying to move her around something you are building - she kept getting knocked out of my hand. Fun!

The art here is F*ing amazing. Making a building game in 48 hours is real hard. There are so many diverse mechanics you have to make. You got real far in the allotted time. I really like dragging the follower around. Games with followers and minions are great. I think the tutorial could use some work. It disappeared before i had a chance to read most of it. Like some other people mentioned I think you need a few more building or follower mechanics before it starts to feel solid. Nice Start. If I could I would rate the art more than 5. Its pretty awesome.

Really nice art. It would be cool to see this developer further, things like random generated worlds and minerals that you can mine would be really cool.

Love the art and music. They're fantastic!
Gameplay has a lot of potential, and the references you mention are already tempting for me, so keep at it!. As for things to improve, I had some issues with the camera, and after unlocking the "Create" tool I wasn't too sure of what to do next, so I just sent my follower to dig around.

Amazing job, keep at it! The planned features sound great :)

Wow! Such a nice game in the short time! Makes fun! I think we both had some problems of the collision modell in our games :D sometimes the character is getting stuck in the tunnels. But all in all, very very good!

Great job, as you can see in the comments, there is a difference between players who had played god games before and those who didn't ^^

For the first ones, all the mechanics are there and easy to comprehend, for the others, there is a little bit of time/confusion as to "what do I do ?".

But as most of the comments, I concur that the art/audio/mood is really nice, I commend you on the technical realisation during the jam's period and support you in continuing your effort on the making of that game.
It fits nicely the theme as well, one follower, good idea, good start.

It's more a proof of concept than an actual game at the moment but good job anyway Christina, congratulations ;)

@scoopsy: thank you, I'm fixing the dialogs as we speak
@Lyje : you're right, I ran out of time
@BrothersT : haha thank you! Yes I'm remaking the engine as we speak, and then I'll start adding to it
@Dremelofdeath : you're quite right. Will work on those!
@Venks : Aww thank you so much! I'm doing it at the moment. What would you like to see more of? Exploration (digging), survival? What aspects of Populous2 and From Dust would you like to see?
insane66 : Thank you! Yeah she does that, it's because I wasn't smart enough and let her have collisions enabled while dragging. I found a fix for that.
McDonaldsWizard : Thank you so much, and you're absolutely right about the tutorial
Enneract: Got it! Thank you!
Carduus: thank you!
Ludipe : thank you, let's hope so
Nelien : Aww thank you, I will do my best!
KunoNoOni: such a nice comment! I will work on it!
kewry: will do!
Javifugitivo: thank you!
AtomicVikings: I get it, you're right.
Diptoman: right on! Thank you!
JohnnySix: thank you! I'll do my best, promise
howieV: thanks so much!
Kyatric: thank you!! I didn't know you did LDs! I'll go check your stuff right now! Agreed, this is a proof of concept, I hope to make it something more soon

Very cute sandbox game :) Too bad i felt alone after a while. With the goal of helping a tribe, it could be excellent because it's very moody. Great job :) Oh i forget to mention that music is perfect. Did you make it ?

I much appreciated how different this game was to most I've rated so far. I also never got to play Populous as a kid because it wouldn't start on our PC way back when. A technical comment, sometimes when the mighty hand is grabbing the follower and the screen starts scrolling the hand sprite and follower sprite gets separated.

Great work ! Really good job with such little time. The idea is very interesting, a god game from a 2d perspective. I hope you will continue to develop it ! I also saw your lava engine, the way the lava move and turn into stone, great job !

Whoa, the pixel art on this one made me check your other submissions. It's really good!. I'm not sure if the earthquakes work as a gameplay mechanic. Reminds me of when Endermen where first introduced in Minecraft and started destroying everything making everyone upset.

The environment dangers (like dinos or lava) sound fun and have a lot of potential to differentiate the game from other sandboxes.

Your lava engine looks really cool! did you write it from scratch? I would love to read more on how it works.
🎤 Christina Antoinette Neofotistou
31. Dec 2013 · 12:22 UTC
Thanks people! <3

@taocayo: Thanks for the kind words. The earthquake was just an incentive for having a well-built home that won't be destroyed, but I didn't have time to fix it.

Yes I wrote my lava engine from scratch in Scirra Construct 2 . You can check out the source here: http://www.scirra.com/forum/topic83305.html

It's basically made with metaballs

The animation on the follower stuck after I picked her up, and sometimes she wouldn't move. Also, the tutorial items would flash too quickly (perhaps they thought I clicked on them when I was trying to move my follower)
