Well, I'd like to say that I competed in LD8 rather than LD48. After realizing the technical issues posed by my original engine, I recoded my engine from the ground up this morning. Almost all my work from the previous 40 hours was lost.
More info can be found in my blog post. Standard WASD controls, R to reload, mouse to shoot. Don't die.

Pretty cool! even better: eight hour game! :D :D :D

Maybe next time you could try sound effects - a great generator is at http://superflashbros.net/as3sfxr .

Graphics: might want to use the rectangle tool next time on the player. But other than that they're nice.

One thing that ruined it was that enemies took millions of hits to kill. Maybe it's just me not pressing the mouse button fast enough :P

Anyway, great game!

After a certain point I started to lose health even after I was clearly not being shot by anyone, and then I died. Do some enemies have bullets that travel through walls?

Well, it crashed a few times before accepting to launch. Played a bit and YOU WIN THAT IS ALL. So, next time, try to use an existing engine and concentrate on the game ;)
