Slime Mold Revenge by Benjamin-L

[raw]
made by Benjamin-L for LD35 (JAM)
Everybody knows that the lowly slime mold is by far the weakest monster in the dungeon. Or is it... It is a little known fact that slime molds can shapeshift into the fearsome dire slime mold -- if they survive long enough. Nobody who has witnessed the dire slime mold has lived to tell the tale, and it is your job to keep it that way.

In this game, you play as a slime mold. Half of the game is spent trying to avoid being killed by the humans, the other half is spent killing them as fast as possible before you return to your original form. While in dire slime mold form, you are impervious to damage and can shoot slime projectiles at the humans. These projectiles do not take turns to move, unlike the human fireballs. They also can penetrate through an entire row of humans. When in normal slime mold form, a single hit can kill you so be careful.

Controls:

Both Forms:

- movement: WASD
- wait one turn: E
Dire Form:

- ranged attack: Shift-WASD

The two songs used are:

- Waltz in A flat major by Chopin played by Olga Gurevich (https://musopen.org/music/3020/frederic-chopin/wal...)
- "Mort! Mort! Mort!" by "Aussitot Mort / MORT MORT MORT" (http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Aussitt_Mort__MO...)

The font is Alagard (http://opengameart.org/content/pixel-fonts-by-pix3...).

Great game! I like playing as the dungeon underdog, that was a lot of fun. Also a fantastic job on the graphics and sound effects. The music really added to the mood of the game and added a lot of polish. If I could make one recommendation I didn't see below, it would be to add a power-up to turn you into the dire slime, and maybe make it so killing multiple (e.g. 3) humans at once added a turn or two to your dire slime time. Overall I think your game shows a lot of polish and professionalism for only 3 days in dev! I especially liked the fonts and layout used in your UI. Had fun with this one, hope you enjoyed making it! Thanks for your entry :)

Great concept, playing as the underdog! A little rough but amazing for your game with the Godot Engine! Also, it might just be me, but I feel like it skipped some of my turns as a Dire Slime, like I'd press one of the movement keys and it just moves the humans while I stood still. Also, the map could be a little larger because once I got into the bottom right corner, there was never any chance of getting out! But I did put up one hell of a last stand! Damn humans!

Haha dire mold, great title. Cool concept too, best score was 5. I wish I could at least push back humans in dire mode, felt kinda unfair when they gang up on you and there's no way to get out.

Simple, but fun idea! Nice, fitting graphics.
There is one thing that bugs me, when you kill a human then it also destroys all projectiles shot by this human, this makes things easier, but it does not make sense.

It actually doesn't destroy specifically the projectiles shot by that human, only the ones in the path of your projectile. I agree that this needs to be tweaked a bit though to make it more clear. Part of the problem is that the projectiles destroyed only disappear after the projectile you fired is gone because my implementation of turns is quite broken.

Switching to dire form felt really good (music/graphics swap nice). There could be a little more feedback for the invulnerable state (though it does says it in the description) - maybe a shield or something pops up to show you denied the projectile.

The random generation was good, but didn't change gameplay a whole lot. I got stuck one time and had to restart the game.
