Mister Misbehave by arhpositive

[raw]
made by arhpositive for LD25 (COMPO)
Mister Misbehave got banished from his city when his actions of messing with innocent people became intolerable. He moved into a quiet place near a couple of villages, inside a forest. However, bad habits have never left Mister Misbehave alone.

One day, waking up from a long nights sleep, something snaps inside him. He knows that he can't stop now. He knows that the townsfolk will be mad at him, but he knows no other way out of this madness. He must insult. He must offend. He must humiliate...

HE MUST MISBEHAVE!

INSTRUCTIONS
MOVING AROUND: Arrow Keys or WASD
MISBEHAVE: SPACE
Run around and misbehave in as many tiles as possible.
If you try to move while misbehaving, you'll cancel the action.
Some townsfolk will chase you with weapons, avoid them.
Some townsfolk in white dresses will try to clean up your mess. Stop them from doing it. It'll cost you points.
Towns are worth more points, trees next, grass last. Misbehaving duration decreases in this order.

EDIT - (17.12.12) - I forgot to commit some small changes I made last night. Committing them right now. The only changes are to the numbers of villagers.

Great start! Wasn't sure why, but the yellow guys didn't have any effect on me.

Did it really need unity? ha

Nice idea! Tile based movement was unexpected, but fits nicely in the game.

I thought this was a lot of fun! It got a bit difficult to do anything when the screen was covered with villagers, though.

i liked it mostly because of the "misbehaving" idea that i think is original, it creates a really neat ambiance :3

It creates that sense of urgent mischief so reminiscent of Ding-Dong-Ditch, very nice :P

This game has the most amusing point of criticism I have for any LD game yet (and not just this LD)

My misbehavings are so much fun to read that I keep getting caught while reading them! Slapping Heidi in the face was my favorite.

Really fun and amusing game.

I love the game! It's fun and requires strategy. It's clear you put some thought into game balance. I'd love to see a post-compo version as well. :)

Thanks for your comments, everyone! Keep them coming.

@JoeCool17 planning on a post-compo version, but I might not have enough time to work on it for at least a couple of weeks.

I agree with your post-mortem, that the texts describing your actions are the best feature of the game. You slap heidi in the face ... I was literally laughing out loudly ;) Other than that I would like to see aversion with more animations and some not-tile-restricted movement. It might be funny to read out the texts aloud as some kind of offscreen-comment so you can focus on the game while getting told what you just did.

Interesting mechanic. Gameplay could vary a little more, like more interactions with different objects or persons. Cool idea though :D

Fun, simple game! Really enjoyed it. Seems like a good game for iOS, but would obviously have to be optimized ;)

If you want to actually survive/win you'd have to miss the best part of the game: reading the misbehavings.

Pretty interesting game. I liked the difficulty and the gameplay, it was rather fun to try and beat the enemies.

Maybe a larger playing field would make the game a bit more forgiving in the beginning?

HEY! THIS IS FUN!Hard too, but that's why is fun.
The little misbehaving are really funny(but most of the time I lost because I was reading them instead of running ^^) The gameplay is really solid, the audio fits perfectly...Congrats!

Nice game, but the amount of villagers pouring out is a bit too much compared to the lengthy time it takes to do bad things to a village. Also, I'd set the amount of villages to a fixed number. A game with 5 villages is easier than 3.

Everyone, thank you so much for all the comments you've made.

@timtipgames: I think it'd be hard to inform the player about their misbehavings with audio feedback, as they'll misbehave so often, the audio will almost always overlap each other. But you have a point about finding another way to present the misbehavings.

@wzl: if I ever get the possibility of doing a post-compo version, I'm thinking about adding more variety to interactions.

@caranha: maybe I should think about a level system which introduces playing fields transforming from larger to smaller after each level. this might make a better difficulty curve, as right now it's only a total of 12 villagers and then the curve stops.

@Everyone else: every comment is really valuable for me, thank you. :)

Nice! I do like the random misbehaviours here, it'd be nice to be able to read them all once you're dead though, pretty hard to keep up with them while you're alive.

This seems to be semi-turn based, did it start out completely turn based to start with? Having time to think between moves might make for an interesting alternative way to play this.

I love the music, it's so catchy! Best part of the game is the mischief text at the bottom, they pretty much liven up the game!

Heh, nice. I really like the tunes, and the sound effects when misbehaving are great. Difficulty ramps up real quick tho.

Score: 558. Fun mechanic. Good music. Would like to see some other mechanics in there, like some way to slow people down or distract them, but this is a solid game and idea.

Fun stuff.
