The Fromagist by ABPositive03
Seriously... I pulled this off?
EDIT: Now that I've slept a bit, I can comment a bit more...
Really this was meant to be an exercise in plot writing to see how well I could do in that regard. I knew due to my lack of time (over half the 48 hours were accounted before due to prior engagements... oops!) text-adventurey type thing was pretty much my only route to an entry.
Twine is pretty awesome, if you're into this sort of thing. I found it very easy to add in variables and whatnot, although unfortunately there's no "else if" type of scripting in there - something that made implementing the endings an exercise in "Screw it - just list 'em all!"
With some more tweaking to twine, and addition of some sort of inventory and combat mechanics (beyond simple variable storage) I could see it really being the best way to make online Zork-like games.
Next game I'd love to do one with actual graphics. I had designs of doing little silly doodles to add along with all the passages but time cut me short on that front.
This was really fun to make, and hope to have a much better entry next time around. This is silly, and barely touches on evolution (that theme really threw me for a loop) but it's here and it's done. I have a game I can literally say I made, even if it's simple and only takes a few minutes to play. :)

p.s. if anyone knows where I can put the actual twine file for my source, let me know. I think technically I'm violating Compo rules but couldn't find a proper host in time.

I guess you've got bacteria and stuff, which is related to evolution.. and you have to try different combos which is artificial (unnatural?) selection in a way.
Anyway, this was hilarious to read and click through. There are a lot of really funny lines and twists contrary to what I expected.
Good work.
As for the source, shouldn't you be able to put it up on a github repo?
Unless I'm mistaken - I just want to keep right by the rules of the compo :)
Not sure if it's down your alley, but you might want to look into Inform 7. It's a text adventure engine that a friend told me about recently and, based on this, you might enjoy using it. It seems really powerful and has an "else if" style thing, I think.
Really, I'd like to do something with real graphics and sound and whatnot next LD... I was just really bad with my scheduling this time around.
Thanks to everyone who commented and liked my little adventure. It's not much but at least something got in :)
I'm going to have to get my own website/blog space soon as I'm back on the java programming kick. Fromagist will get a new home when that happens.
