Enhanced Man by Per

[raw]
made by Per for LD24 (COMPO)
This is a classic, quite simple platformer where you use the arrow keys to move and jump.

Press enter/esc/space to start the game when the first text is shown (forgot to add a message there ;) )

Pick up different powerups to jump, run, and air-glide better. This is the "evolution" part :)

Blue cubes are extra health
'R' pickups makes you run faster
'Ae' pickups makes you control the character better in the air (sideways and down)
'J' pickups makes you jump higher
'H' pickups increases max health and refills health completely

You can jump much higher on lava, but you get damaged!

Some control issues: You don't have to time the jumps. Just hold the up key to jump higher on lava.

Other known issues that will be fixed in the post-compo version:
* Missing health bar
* Missing in-game help messages
* Level 1 is to difficult
* Entering a lava block from the side kills you very fast :)

Tested mostly in Chrome for the WebGL version.
The canvas version seems to work in IE8, Firefox, Opera and Safari but runs really slow ;)

If you don't here any music or SFX, please let me know. I would also be very grateful for telling me about any bugs or other problems you find :)

Enjoy!!!

I just get a blank white page in Safari.

This is using WebGL which is not very widely supported. You won't be able to run it on any version of IE and most versions of Safari and FireFox. Only Chrome has decent out of box support. So if you want to rate this entry try Chrome.

Ok, thanks Barry. I don't know what the problem is but I could only run the game in Chrome on my old laptop. I hope it is a problem with WebGL and not some bug... Do you get any error messages in some console?

The game is fine. I like the 2.5D graphics. Also, simplicity of the graphics is great.

Ouch, actually, Chrome and FireFox just display a "Level 1 - The Forest" and stop.

I enjoyed it, though it was brutally difficult. I had to rate it low on theme. It was fun, but it didn't really feel like evolution - it felt like leveling up.

I got it to work using Chrome. My version is 21.0.1180.83 m.

The game was pretty fun! I liked the graphics and music, and that you could choose which path you wanted to take through the levels. I only wish there were more levels, so that building up your stats could be more meaningful. But great job!

I like that you used webgl, wish I'd see more projects using pure browser technologies instead of relying on plugins.

Lighting was cool, but game really lacked polish. Health bar missing was very annoying. Pickup detection seemed a little buggy. Audio was alright.

It's a shame, because I'm sure with just a little more work this could've been a really great entry, but it really just felt so unfinished. In a competition with a short time window like this one, though, it's totally understandable, especially since you didn't use a plugin like unity.

There is now a canvas version available that works in IE but it runs slow as hell :)

The lighting really enforced the mood for this one. Although I did try but I can't seem to reach the last yellow pickup. I've had the Aerial contorl upggrade but I believe I need to run first before I can jump at a great distance. I likewd it though.

Wow, I've never seen anything being platform agnostic between WebGL and Canvas 2D!

How'd you do that? Just different render processes with the same game logic?

monkeymad2: I am using three.js which has a couple of different renderers. There is also a DOM renderer and an SVG renderer, but I haven't tested any of them.
You have to perform some small tweaks with materials but it was a minor issue when the graphics is this simple :)

Very impressive! I was thinking if it's possible to make a game with WebGL & three.js for month, and now I see it's possible to do it in 48 hours! Thumbs up!

I like the lighting, but It's a bit too dark (at least on my monitor) and it made the game a bit difficult to play. It's good except for that though. The webgl version worked fine in Firefox

Nice use of WebGL, everything works in Chrome! So, about the game. The sfx, music and movement are good, but as with many other games, I feel that mere character upgrades are a weak connection to the theme.

I really liked this; its an excellent chassis for a bigger game.
