Infestation by jwin

[raw]
made by jwin for LD24 (COMPO)
Infestation is a fairly simple overhead shooter with enemies that evolve based on your actions. The longer they stay alive, the more likely subsequent enemies are to share their traits. Stay alive as long as you can and try to get the highest score!

There are 3 different weapons to use (Minigun, Laser, and Rockets) depending on the situation you find yourself in. There are also 4 enemy traits: Health (green), Speed (purple), Intelligence (red), and Swarming. The last one splits an enemy into multiple enemies each with a fraction of the total health.

Its kind of difficult to tell, but new waves of enemies are generated based on the enemies that are currently alive. So if lots of fast enemies are still alive, the next wave will contain even faster enemies.

I had a lot of fun at my first Ludum Dare. It was pretty hectic, but I think I made a pretty fun game with more polish than I was expecting for such a short development time. Hope you enjoy playing!

I really enjoy games like this, and you made it look really nice.

However, it isn't the most innovative, and I'm not sure how it relates to evolution.

The ship movement is sloppier than you'd typically want for a game of this type (see Beat Hazard or Geometry Wars), which made it near impossible to play with any precision.

It plays great. The movement is a little sluggish though, it's hard to avoid the bullets.

Even though I couldn't notice where the evolution was, I believe the enemies' behavior has changed. I loved the visuals and controls - well done!

Well done. I like the visual style and the gameplay isnt too bad either. More enemy variety would be nice.

Nice game. The movement felt smooth, but I think the knock back from getting shot is a bit too strong.

Amazing backgrounds, loved the city, lights and grid. Gameplay was pretty smooth and good you fit in evolution of the ai.

The visuals are REALLY good, nice style, well executed, love the neo-retro.
Gameplay is fun, weapons are satisfying to use.
Difficulty is a little too high, ship movement is a little too slidy for the number of obstacles to avoid.

Pretty neat little game. The only complaint is how quickly the difficulty spiked. Within a minute, I was totally overwhelmed, and was too slow-moving/slow-shooting to do anything. It quickly devolve to running away and launching the big fireball things to the enemies off screen. A faster pace might do wonders.

pretty cool game. controls are fine. could have used a larger screen or less zoom, as i found myself keeping the enemies just off screen while fighting them to get hit less. also it would have been nice if the enemies' traits were move obvious.

I love the graphic, especially how the city looks. But imho the ballance could be made better, every game I suddenly got overflown by enemies and die instantly. Bouncing after collision with enemy ship does not help either

I like this game a lot! It convinces you to go after that which you find most difficult, and then I find that actually just running and gunning may be more profitable. Were it a little easier to dodge the bullets, or maybe know how many enemies are alive, could lead to some interesting strategies. That second part doesn't matter to me, Green is always the most dangerous for me.

Although its too late, how are Laptop users supposed to be able to play this without a Mouse Wheel?
Game was fun, and got pretty far.

Agree with others about the movement, but the rest was fun and quite entertaining! I played till I died, a few times, so it was definitely engaging.

Congrats on your first ludum dare and I hope to see your first post-compo soon! :D

Nice game. It's kinda hard see an evolution (or a mutation) of the enemies in this bullet-hell without pauses, but i trust you there it is!

Really nice, amazing polish for the time period! I wish you'd innovated on the gameplay more, though, and it's very hard to see the evolution going on.

The game has a very tron feel to it. I enjoyed playing it. but I don't see its relation to the theme.

Asteroids on steroids. I didn't mind the movement at all, thought it was good. Pretty cool sound effects. Fun stuff.
