Artificial Selection by Quentin

made by Quentin for LD24 (COMPO)
I thought this was going to be a good game, but I give up. Sucking at art and lack of practice makes games suck, so I'm just going to keep learning and trying to draw until next LD and hopefully I'll have a decent game.
This is one of the first games I've ever made, aswell, I've made a warmup game for this LD and that's about it.

The game:
You're a ball(from lack of drawing abilities) and there's a bunch of slime things, bananas and bat things chasing you(first "AI" I've ever created, as well). You can shoot(Arrow Keys) and move around(WASD). The only gameplay happens when you die, which is when you gain a random mutation. That's the evolution of it, wow.

If you do the Konami Code, you get a speed boost, shot speed boost and a damage boost. I was going to keep that a secret but it's not really worth it :P

Sorry for not being able to make an Applet, I'll try to make one next time so it's easier to play my monstrosity.

Timelapse(I did a whole lot of nothing, as you can see): http://youtu.be/Y2saNLn5AK0

Interesting concept of evolution and nice music. It could be better, yes, but I can see where you were trying to go.

This is my first LD (though I've been programming for a long white), and I found that using GameMaker really made things easier, so maybe consider using something other than java?

I don't know if I was doing something wrong, but I had to major problems. Firstly shooting didn't seem to do anything for me, except very rarely (like once a minute a bullet would appear). Secondly, when I died and muated (-5 health), nothing actually happened.

I'm on Ubuntu 21.04 Java 1.6.0_24

I win, I win! Death to the purple bats and the bananas!

I was expecting, maybe, to evolve as I killed stuff. I like the different drops that you get, and that the monsters drop stuff before they die, so you can sort of harvest the banana for the <-> powerups.

Needs more sound effects and some way of winning. animations would have been nice as well. Anyways. Well done. It's your first attempt after all.

I think you have great potential; try working with sprites if your art really bothers you, because making pixel art doesn't essentially require drawing skill to look great. That said, I think that it was relatively great, and I love this music!

Took me a second to get the controls, but the game itself is quite nice. :) I like the music, too! :D

Too bad the enemies don't respawn after killing them all. Nice idea!

You put yourself down too much, the art isnt that bad. The music is very good too.

Good effort, I think you're a little hard on yourself - LD is tough and you've got something out there that you can build on. I had a bit of trouble with the shooting, the bullets only appeared infrequently but other than that it could work well. I liked the idea of evolving when you die.

The bullet speed depends on your framerate, I didn't really realize that until I tried it on my Macbook :/

Cool idea, but lacks polish. The gameplay isn't interesting enough right, enemies are all the same bascially, just different images. I was able to defeat all of them within 3 or so deaths - not Try Again or anything from there.
Don't force the player to pick up his mouse for restarting in a keyboard-based game.
More sfx would be nice, music was good. The graphics, however, are rather poor. Hit detection should be pixel-perfect, but all the hitboxes seem to be squares.
