Human 2.0 by dengzo

[raw]
made by dengzo for LD24 (COMPO)
Development: Used Box2D for physics, coded in Javascript (for the Canvas element) with Sublime Text 2 (with JS Linter plugin).. drew the graphics on paper, took photos of the paper and photoshop-ed .. edited sounds together with REAPER ..

Worked on it in two 14 hour sessions. .. got pretty crazy in the end, but was worth it.

All game instructions are in the intro screen when the game is loaded ;)

Nice! I found the pace of the game to be a bit slow, but I like the visual style, and the sound worked well with it, too.

nice idea. found the arena a bit small to save anyone from the debris. the sun seemed to have some glitches, got stuck on the horizon but slided along the mountain sides when panning the screen.

Good mood to the game, was way too slow for my tastes I didn't play past getting 2 advanced humans because it was taking too long. I like the atmosphere to the game and the graphics.

the game has a nice dark mood thanks to the music and graphic. The "sun" in was hypnotic.

The ambience and the pencil drawing style gives the game a great mood. Then the harvesting humans is quite a freaky idea and works with the theme well. Then the meteorite physics works well, I find I can't really push the big ones, but I can shield the creatures from the smaller bouncing debris by pushing it away.

@darkshadow: thanks man! you pretty much seem to get the idea! almost everyone think that you play the Sun,.. but you are playing something else ;)

Great art and sound! Gameplay feels a little slow-ish and I'd love to see that made a little crisper, but I have no other complaints!

Game is too slow for my tastes but I have to say I love the graphics and the atmosphere. Good job :)

Took me a bit to realize that the sun can actually push the "end of all life" away. Quite enjoyable but not hard to keep intressted in.

Good mood, even if a little to slow.

Pretty nice. A bit disapointing that nothing new comes from new levels (maybe I didn't played far enough), but in 14h, that's already an awesome achievement.

Really like the concept and the sound is very atmospheric. The art is also quite charming.

A very good example of two things I like now: HTML5 and hand-drawn art :) One of the best I've seen so far on LD

@plule: yeah, level 14 is pretty good! I myself have not been over 10, haha.. I had lot of ideas for more things to come in each level, but 48 hours didn't make it happen :/

@dekart: thanks man, I used to make my first games in Java, but it seems to be more simple to make them in Javascript .. it helped alot to draw on paper, took so much more time to do it in photoshop :/

I think the sketch style graphics and music made the game have a great mood

Solid work, but it's too simple to be a puzzler, and too easy to challenge reflexes

Can only agree with the others: music and the unique graphics created an interesting mood!

You're not really supposed to get sounds from freesound in a compo entry, SFX must be made during the competition, but hey, what's done is done. As long as you don't do it again next time. :)

Very atmospheric, as the others said. It was very creepy... I think it's because it makes you think, "Are we being bred for something by some unseen force?" Insanely cool.

@Puzzlem00n: ahhh ok, well I used freesound to get some samples and edited them with REAPER, but you seem to be right, so I will not do it next time.. it's my first LD so I hope people forgive me :P .. but thanks for the comment ;)

Nice graphics, it's lovely see hand-drawn pictures come to life.. The gameplay is a bit slow and repetitive, but it's ok, overall.

Nice! I liked visual made in pencil, very good ambient sounds, gives the game a great mood. Game is too slow, but not enough to be a problem. Good Work.

I really liked the style. I think it would have been more enjoyable if the game ran twice as fast.
🎤 dengzo

@zatyka: twice as fast! that's crazy, but good point .. maybe I'm not as much an action gamer as I thought.. For example, I'm waiting for the XCOM: Enemy Unknown remake.. turn based is pretty slow gameplay and I love it :p

It is a good idea.
I'm getting ready a game with Box2D and I know how hard can be to define bodies and their interaction, but i see you have no use of joints or something complex, anyway i like the final result, it give me ideas for mine ,thanks dengzo!

@juaxix: the only Box2D joint I'm using is the mouse joint to pick up creatures. Hope your Box2D game comes out good ;)

I absolutely love the graphics and mood in this!
Would have been cool if something new happened in the later levels.

Incredibly mood and atmosphere, loved the ambient sound. I liked the physical omniscent present of the player as some sort of deity. Gameplay wise, its a bit on the shallow side. Would like to see more interception and interactions from the player.

The graphics. the physics and the sounds are good, but the gameplay sucks.
Guarding always the same stuff from few meteorites in slow motion.. I don't like that.

The graphics are awesome. The game was okay. I liked the physics but you could have made a better challenge. Although it was kinda nice how it was.
Fun to watch the things evolve. At first I just killed them off before realizing I had to keep them.

If you used audio from other sources this should technically not be a Jam game in my opinion. I'll rate anyways because in the end it's all about the challenge.

First of all: great game.

I like the simple gameplay, the concept, fitting graphics, nice atmosphere.
But it gets boring after 2 round, its just too easy and not much to do for you. Also to control the asteroid AND the creatures is maybe to much. Only the asteroid would make it more challenging and better i thing.

But in 14 hours: great Job!

Increasing the pacing of the game would have gone a long way towards making this a much more compelling game. There were a lot of moments where I was just waiting for something to happen. This can sometimes be good thing if you use those moments to build suspense (the eerie soundtrack helps) but the meteors aren't really that scary. Otherwise this game had great atmosphere thanks to the sound and art.

nicely stylised. it feels like there's quite a lot of waiting in this game - it would be nice if there was a little more to do while you wait (perhaps more meteors but smaller and less damaging to the creatures or something). Anyway, nice game - good work :)

I can imagine that it took you a lot of time. Lovely graphics and the sound makes for a great mood. It could be more interactive, but still nice.

One of the best moods I've seen so far! Good atmospheric music does a lot in that regard, but I also really enjoyed the strangeness of the graphics. The humans 2.0 flying to the black hole as if 'transcending' was pretty creepy specially the first time! :D
Congratulations!

I like the hand drawn art style, it is something different and unique to your entry. The game might be more interesting if the asteroids came faster. Much of the time it felt like there was nothing to do.
