Survivalism by Walt

[raw]
made by Walt for LD24 (COMPO)
Survivalism is about assimilation and confrontation. Adapt your arsenal to the enemies you are facing, stay on the tip of your toes and be quick or be dead.

You need to pick up Allels to adapt the genetic configuration of your attack. Enemies are susceptible to different genetic components and you are able to fire only one shot at a time, before you need to reconfigure your attack.

Control scheme:
Arrow keys to move
Space to attack

Pretty neat, although it didn't seem to escalate or have a type of scoring, so I have no idea if I did well or not.

good point, a score system would have been on my list, but alas ..

I can't seam to play the game. The window just flickers, and i have to force quit. I'm running windows 32bit.

Seems pretty cool. Took me a little while to figure out how to defeat enemies, but once I got the hang of it, it's smooth and fairly interesting. My main criticisms are that the red and orange alleles are a little too similar in color, and that it would play better with a game pad. Very well done overall.

Interesting game. Would like to see more added into it

Fun game. I was first trying to collect dna according to monster colors and not monster icons. I think they are a bit to small. Using monster color for color weakness would be more intuitive in my opinion.

@ AaronGordon: some systems seem to have trouble with the screen ratio i picked. added a version to let people pick their resolution

@ metadept: i agree, the colors could do with a little more differentiation

@ bejamin: yes, the overlap is problematic.

thanks for the feedback so far guys

A cool little game. I thought it was a bit fast paced to begin with but then I got the hang of it and it was fun. A little bit of warning/feedback when there are off-screen enemies flying towards you would have been nice. It looks good and is very smooth, great work!

thanks mate! as mentioned above i agree about some lacking signs and feedback. considering the lack of time for iteration i'm still fairly happy with what is there ;)

As others have said, I had difficulty spotting the icons at first.

It was good fun once I knew what I was doing, and the screen shake effects worked well. Would be even better with more of a progression in difficulty, and some audio.

Great game! Well executed gameplay, simple and polished graphics. Some audio would be nice. It might be fun to play on a gamepad.

The core gameplay is quite fun. A little more polish like audio and this is a really great game. The graphics could be great mood setters, if they were combined with music and sound effects.

agreed, audio a some refinement in player feedback would make sense. had no idea where to get audio in time, but I'm glad you liked it

Re. your comment: the off-screen thing is a bug: I was going to make a "you got lost" screen but ran out of energy/time.
Re. getting killed while being on land: there's a small lock icon on the island that indicates safety from flood, I guess you didn't see it :(

I liked FX and smooth controls. As for gamplay it's not my kind of game, thought everything works nice :)

About my game: What second cave you mean? There are 3 locations: big rock, ? and Bunker. Or do you mean second black stone? I've improved the description (yet again), hopefully you can now finish the game if you want to try again.

I guess the map is just too big and there are too little content in it, so players don't find the stuff from there. So you found 1 out of 3 places.. And I've been uncomfortable at telling everything from start to finish (as I consider that it spoils it), but I guess there's nothing more to do, as the game is just not accessible enough.

Cool little game, took a while to figure out how to get past the title screen. (enter)
I like the concept, but it isn't all that fun in its current state. It could, however, be pretty good with some additional polish!

I really like the graphics and the idea of combining colors to defeat the enemies are really nice. Though, I think there is lack of feedback (score or something similar) so the player knows how he/she is doing.

@zx81: yeah, no idea where u all got your music from in time

@gama11: i agree, some more time for polishing good have gone a long way. nevertheless i think core gameplay i quite fun and can shine with just a little more polish

@ghRibacki: very true, i'm gonna flesh that out in a post-comp version. should work nicely, now that core stuff is in place. extending this is gonna be fairly easy :)

Really liked the graphics, shame there was no sound. I wasn't really sure what was going on in the game. A tutorial level or maybe some nice pictorial instructions would be good. Some kind of progress feedback would also be good. I'm guessing you ran out of time...? Would definitely like to see what you could do in a post-compo version of this.

The player movement in this feels nice. Having some measure of progress (e.g. a scoring system or timer, multiple "levels" or "waves") would help, since right now there isn't much reason to play more than once or twice.

Nice arena shooter but where is the score man? It has taken some time to find out how to kill the enemies and it's hard to see what to use for them because by the time you are probably dead. And sometimes the not moving shooters are don't die even with the correct thingies equiped.

And don't force me to play in full screen again! That is the worst thing in life! I had to restart Windows more then 10 times...

Really cool idea, fun to play, and awesome graphics. Innovation points!

It could really do with some sound but otherwise this is a great entry.

I wish you'd made it more obvious that I have to push 'enter' to start though. That's not a terribly common choice and there isn't any clear indication.
