Space Amoebas by bigbadwofl

made by bigbadwofl for LD24 (COMPO)
INSTRUCTIONS IN A NUTSHELL: Collect Purple Power-ups and Swallow enemies.

WORKS BEST IN GOOGLE CHROME (possibly Safari too)

This LD, I cast down the proverbial shackles of C++ and OpenGL. I decided to try my hand at making a game in javascript using the HTML5 canvas and so, 'Space Amoebas' was born.

My apologies if it plays badly in your browser of choice. Chrome and Safari simply have the fastest JS interpreters (Although I haven't tested in Safari yet).

Please remember to post a comment when you rate so I know to give your game a go too!

Technologies: JS, HTML5, CSS, Fruity Loops, Photoshop

I have a new found appreciation for C++ after the mess with javascript this weekend. fun game. it slows down for you when the difficulty increases :)

Nice
It could've used some better visual feedback or sound effects for the power-ups and hits tho.

Cool game. Instantly worked out what to do and it was pretty fun! I fear a keyboard-based control scheme might have worked better, though. My amoeba wouldn't always stick to my cursor which means there were portions of the game screen I couldn't move to. Other than that, great game!

I really liked this; the backing music was great, and the graphics were really cool too. The gameplay is relatively standard without an ultimate goal (other than to survive) but I enjoyed it

The blue amoeba moves straight toward the top left and I have no clue how to control it :( So I can't start the game.

Those Amoebas were really cute, and the power up idea is nice.. I don't like the fact you can't absorb other amoebas, and you become tinyer if you kill one.

@Lucariatias: The amoeba follows the mouse, what browser are you playing in?

A fun little game. Felt a bit like asteroids but different in a good way. I liked your take on power ups. It would be interesting to see if you could evolve the gameplay so that the player was building up to something greater over time and not simply avoiding obstacles forever.

I feel this game if more about survival than evolution. Also the game is too big for my screen, i had to scroll up and down while i was playing.

@PapyGaragos: Sorry about that, I made a call to cater for people with at least 1280x1024. Thanks for the comment.

Cool game, I loved the color effects. Still miss a goal.

PS @pknowles : you should use Haxe instead ;)

Very sharp, well-coded, good interface, and quite polished. The graphics are simple but the fuzzy edges and transparency make it look neat and kind of amoeba-ey. The music is really cool, but there are only 1-2 other sound effects that I heard. There's not much to the game - three powerups and some other effects, only really swimming around to do, and not much strategy - but what's there works well and is fun. Great to have one that runs in a browser - so much easier. Nice job!

Cool game. The movement of the amoeba was a bit hitchy (would have probably been a bit nicer with a more acceleration based seeking behavior), and I found the purple ability really confusing. When I was purple and hit someone I shrunk and turned blue, which I assumed was a bad thing the first time I played.

Nice game idea. Really liked the graphic style and the music went well with the game play too. It got a bit laggy as the screen filled up with amoebas, though.

Nice graphics and sound.

Could have done with some more obvious indicator when you gain the ability to eat other ameobas.

Nice. Good to see more people use HTML5+JS+Canvas+etc.
