Death to Polys by hugheth

[raw]
made by hugheth for LD35 (COMPO)
An arcade game where you star as a deviant Scaffold, protecting the illegal junk trade from the ever encroaching police so you can get your fix. My first Ludum Dare submission and first ever 3D game :D Hope you enjoy!

HINT: You can capture buildings with scaffold at any height, meaning you can reduce the risk of the buildings getting in the way - it just means you have to nerd pole higher every time to collect your junk.

What a delightfully silly game. I love the absurdity of it, the graphics are lovely, and the gameplay is original yet fun. It's almost a shame there's no way to turn the sound back on after muting it... I like your bad acapella music.

It seems to crash occasionally for no discernable reason. I'm not sure what to make of that. Luckily, the Reset button still works, so it's easy to reset the game when it does crash.

Thanks for the comments snowy - I think the bug is when you get to the edge of the board :P

Any chance I could get a soundtrack download?

funny game :-) Once the tutorial was over, everything got crazy a bit too quick. Also, if I don't have anymore metal, am I stuck at the bottom?

Everything about this game is absurdly charming, I think the moving sound effect may be the best sound effect ever created. I had lots of fun. One or two bugs that you probably know about, sometimes the scaffold doesn't animate. Also it threw me a bit that I wasn't able to jump while already moving, jumping and then moving while jumped was all that seemed to work when "drawing" lines. But these are minor things, I'll definitely come back to this one!

Goddamnit Hugheth, now I'll be going "DUM DUM DUM... DUM DUM DUM" all day :D

Seriously, nice game, lovely soundtrack. Yeah, I can confirm bug at the edge. Also I think buildings spawn a little too fast and generate metal too slowly, I ended up being trapped multiple times, but that means you got me to play multiple times. Good job!

First off, from playing the tutorial it didn't seem like the game for me. I'm not saying it won't be fun for someone else, it just wasn't fun for me. But the game wasn't the worst part for me. The audio was, and I think alot of people can agree with me on this. The audio is really annoying and it kills the whole experience.

Hi swedishwb, it's definitely fair I took "self produced" music to the extreme. Fortunately you can unlock mute. Did you have any usability issues with the tutorial itself, or just not your cup of tea?

Very enjoyable.
I like the graphics with a nice choice of colors, the music with the effort behind it and the original idea.
I found the gameplay a bit slow; with the police moving on their own, smoother controls would help playing cat and mouse.
Great work!

Like everyone have already said - sounds are so silly and yet wonderful :D Gameplay-wise the game defends itself pretty nicely and tutorial was most definietely funny. Great game ;)

Average overall which is fair because it is definitely unique and fits the theme well, adding the tutorial is a HUGE benefit.
In fact i can see a lot of positive effort to earn points here, but the game was annoying, hard to understand and play, and just awful for me personally. Don't feel bad about my honesty because games like this have their audience and im sure you have plenty based on comments so far.

I had fun with this, but once a million buildings started spawning I had no idea what to do. The tutorial is perhaps missing some vital bit of information about the aim of the game.

Otherwise I quite enjoyed the silly music and visually it was very striking. I could see this being developed further into something more coherent and enjoyable.

I mainly wanted to test that I could get something solid done in the time available as it's my first one, and it definitely shows I kinda made it up as a went along :)

If you want another hint - you can still capture buildings once they've grown by placing scaffold around them at a higher level. So as the game progress you need to make sure you grow your metal resources to be able to reach the higher levels well. I found that having common passageways a few blocks above the ground helped with this, and focus on capturing land rather than eliminating the police.

Very cool concept! The animations could be a bit faster to quicker surround the tiles. After some minutes playing I sadly got an "TypeError: tile is undefined", but the game is really fun to play! Good work!

Haha, that was a good laugh and some fun mechanics. The soundtrack definitely sold me!

Nice! I think that I don't understand all of the mechanics but it's a funny game with your beatboxing music.

A solid entry for LD. The towers were moving too fast to get any meaningful captures. I was just trying to close off some towers while other towers were emerging in my way of putting down more scaffolds, stripping me off my precious metals in the process. I couldn't play it well, but kudos to everyone who was able to. :)

Very neat idea here. I found the pace of the tutorial helpful. However, once it ended, things spawned in the world a bit too fast. Sometimes, the "capture" logic seemed to break, as I surrounded buildings but they didn't get captured. I enjoyed the music and minimalist visual style.

Hi, nice game ! We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #35.
Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description
