Wanderlost: The First Sortie by avalonknight

[raw]
made by avalonknight for LD24 (JAM)
Movement: LEFT/RIGHT
Attack: A
Jump: UP

Compared to other Jam games I've made, this is not a quick six-hour black-and-white entry with a gag ending, but instead, it's a combination project with Comic Jam going on at the same time, with the comic entry serving as the immediate prequel to this.

Additional commentary can be found in the game.

It was a bit short, but I enjoyed it. The character was well designed, as well as other parts of the game. Maybe the background was too simple.

Maybe my biggest complain is that every time you press 'A' in order to attack, it resets the animation, so if it hasn't been completed, you don't deal dammage, but anyways, it was nice having to coordinate the movement.

Very sweet graphics and smooth mechanics. The biggest issue was with the attack like AirRider3 said but I think I understand what you were going for. I used it in quick presses to do lots of damage on the enemy directly in-front of me but this technique did work for the star which required full swings to reach it.

Overall its a really nice cleanly done entry. Good one!

Nice graphics. Other have already mentioned the attack issue. It also would have been nice to have clear indicators of damage (both given and taken).

Dave says: As everyone else has said, having the attack animation reset everytime you press i was not something that I like. I would not mind a slow attack speed, but reseting the attack was not fun.

lol. me: "oh it's just a sphere! this will be easy! ... yep ... hmm it grew spikes- OOPS I DIED"

The attack thing was mentioned a lot. Also for the final boss I kinda just walked into the middle and spammed the attack button - for some reason that did damage, and I did damage way faster than it did damage to me, so I won. Seemed like spamming A worked on every enemy except the spike.

So it's a good start but you really need collision detection of some sort, so that I don't actually walk into the spike and then drain ALL my HP accidentally, that is kinda frustrating. And definitely you need to checkpoint every time a new level starts, dying is frustrating otherwise. Other than that, nice start!
