Shapelution by TuxedoFish

[raw]
made by TuxedoFish for LD24 (COMPO)
Provides a download link to the game. The source is an eclipse project in a zip. In this game the enemies are randomly created to begin with but a couple of levels in they learn from there deaths and evolve into the ones which make it live longer based on prior experience. But all you have to worry about is shooting them down ;). This is my first LD entry and im kind of happy i finished something having procrastinated most of this summer. wasd to move and mouse to shoot.

Interesting game, I kept getting huge shapes that I would kill in a few moments but eventually it made one so small and weirdly shaped I spent a minute or more trying to get it then just gave up. Certainly fits the theme of evolution although the mechanics of just shooting some shapes wasn't hugely rewarding seeing how the shapes change was fun.

Didn't run on Mac.
Also, a Web link implies that it will play in the browser not download.

I really like the idea, as described, but in the game it isn't obvious that it's happening - I'm not sure how you generated shapes, but perhaps it'd work better with using some kind of underlying DNA for generating the shapes (maybe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turtle_graphics), and randomising/combining those?

The levels are so short that it seems jarring to have the transitions between them, or even a count - make them longer, or just make them seamless.

Well i have a regular shape generator which takes parameters which randomize for the first 3 "level" and then base it upon which made it last longer. However my algorithm for combining shapes is awful ... so thanks for the ideas and ill try update it so the levels are seamless.

Nice idea although gameplay was a little strange because as other people have said, the levels weren't so clearly separated and after a time, shapes just kind of stopped appearing. That said, I liked what you were doing with the shapes and you should be very pleased at having got this finished; especially in your first LD. Well done.

Evolution works .. got stuck after about 6 rounds with an shape I was unable to shoot and see. :D Some directions wouldn't be bad, it took a while until I noticed I had to shoot something there :D

It's true that after some times, I doubt that I even can destroy these bastards polygons :D. Nicely done.

Very interesting background, it made some interesting shapes, but gameplay wise it leaves a lot to be desired... sometimes some shapes are never even onscreen making progression impossible.

Not being able to aim also hurts, and having no goal and no way to lose other than bad luck is even more disheartening.

Oh well, overall it was alright.

Okay, really, this is the third Java 7 game I've seen. Why can't people just use Java 6 for a bit longer while 7 spreads?
