The Spaceman by malec2b

[raw]
made by malec2b for LD23 (COMPO)
The Spaceman is a top-down exploration game. You play as an astronaut who's crash-landed on a strange planet.

Made using Flashpunk and the Ogmo Editor.

Arrow Keys to move and C and X for your shields.

The main thing I decided to experiment with this project is a game where you lose abilities over the course of the game. At the beginning of the game, you have two crystals which allow you to shield yourselves against the two colors of enemy projectiles. However, in order to progress, you need to deposit the crystals in pedestals, leaving you without their power.

I also wanted to make the game very non-linear, letting you find your own path through the world.

I unfortunately had to cut a lot to make it within the time limit, especially since I wasn't able to work for the first day of the compo. This means most of the story got cut, 2/5ths of the level design and another crystal/shield, but ultimately I'm proud I managed to get a more-or-less complete game like this done in 24 hours.

Kept going through passageways to end up in a different room, stuck inside a wall. Happened twice before I decided to post here.

Cool game, like the atmosphere... Flash crashed after a while though, upon trying to change screens.

Great mood, and nice presentation. While I normally prefer sandbox worlds, I did feel a bit lost without purpose. Good job overall :)

I got stuck in a wall. Until then it was nice graphics and pretty fun. Like the idea of losing abilities!

Still getting stuck in walls. Also the games seems heavy on firefox. Completely crashed it.

Great concept of mixing Ikaruga with Zelda ! Could make a really nice larger game with this.
Losing ability is a very good idea and graphics and musics are very nice.

Nice mechanic with the loss. Thought some invincibility with getting hit would be nice, or some checkpointing.

The game didn't crash for me (nor did I get stuck anywhere) but it sure was hard! Good job :) loved the retro look of the game.

Hard game, but I like the concept of the different colored shields, and the art looks great.

I really like this game but I didn't manage to finish it. It's very hard. At first you have to explore until you build a mental map of the area, I managed to get both of the crystals into the pedestals but died before getting back to the exit. I love the idea, graphics and audio. Really good job on getting this much done in one day!

Just want you to know that There are some tile collision glitches. I got trapped in a tile upon entering another room. You'd probably like to know that.

Love the graphics and sound, really adds a great atmosphere. Nice shield mechanic too, although I found it quite difficult at times (mostly in areas with more than one bullet colour).
