Urth Defense by kylerhoades
Defend your tiny world, Urth, from an onslaught of nuclear missiles. Featuring an extra small game area intended to make the game more frantic and to give a feeling of claustrophobia.
Collect power-ups to assist you in your mission. Blast those missiles out of the sky!
Controls: Arrow keys to move. Tap or hold Space to shoot.
If you survive, your score is multiplied by the number of lives you have remaining. If you shoot down all 100 missiles and collect all 5 bonuses, you have played a perfect game and will receive the maximum score possible (1000 points). Leave your highest score in the comments.
Good luck!

At first I thought it was very difficult, but then the 2nd time I won quite easily. Once you get the weapon upgrades (especially the 2nd) it becomes a bit too easy. The game itself is well-rounded, but nothing really stands out: the enemies could be more interesting, the music doesn't really fit, there could be a bit more work on the graphics, and I'm not really fond of the control scheme.
@karnakgames: I'm glad someone picked up on the message behind the game. This piece was intended to provoke thought and encourage positive change, after all.
I agree with the thoughts that the screen size is slightly too small, but the music and sound effects were really cool.
The weapon upgrades (what I assume the + are) don't seem to do anything. The concurrently incoming enemies are tough.
Good move to make it actually difficult to stay in the center, the enemies are easier to hit from the side.
The + icons are the upgrades. There are 4 upgrade levels. The first is simply a faster rate of fire, which you will probably only notice if you hold down space instead of tapping it. The second upgrade onwards is where it starts getting crazy.
If you get hit or Urth gets hit, you lose a life and go back one level of upgrade. If you keep losing lives, it might look like the + doesn't do much.
One important point though: You cannot use music made with wolfram tunes. Their terms of use prohibits the distribution of content generated by the site. Yeah, it sucks:
"You may not modify, copy, distribute, transmit, display, perform, reproduce, publish, license, create derivative works from, transfer, or sell any information or content obtained from this Site"
Cheers!
I don't know if it was a bug but '+' signs had no effect the first time I played the game, the second time they gave me a triple shot.
Not very different from asteroids with a tiny world in the middle but it was fun.
