Ok...Now this is akward! by Pierrec

[raw]
made by Pierrec for LD23 (COMPO)
As usual, my game is much a story than a game, and as usual, I didn't took the theme too litteraly.
Tiny World evoked me this thing you say when you stumble across someone you didn't expect to see :

"It's a small world!/It's a tiny world!"
(At least, we say it in french...)

You'll understand...

The game was made on Adventure Game Studio, graphics on GraphicsGale and Music on Aviary's Music Creator.

A good game !! And now a comment in french because it's easier for me.

It's just missing background bar sounds ;)

Loved it. Great story, awesome graphics! And in Poland people also say "what a small world it is" - "jaki mały ten świat", when they meet someone they didn't expect to see. Very good take on the theme.

This entry was funny. I played through once and it was funny and well-drawn. Even though the graphics didn't change much it was still charming and amusing. The fact that it had music that wasn't annoying and slipped in the background really helped to.

Thank you for this.

I really like the mood of the game. The history is cool too. But as you said is almost not a game. I enjoyed playing it though.

Thanks for the game!

I almost did something with that "it's a tiny world" in mind, but.. I didn't. Well, luckily for me as yours is well done, has a good story, and really nice characters :)

Really really liked it. Dialogues are great, the game's really fun (and funny) and the way you interpreted the theme was very original.

Excellent ! I really loved it, at first I was a bit afraid of not doing anything but the story just got me. The twist was great, good humor, not a "game" but I had some good time.
A bit of sound ambiance could have been good but it's to say something

An good story with a lot of humor inside of it! The graphisms and the sound are really well adapted, I find my self imerged in it, thanks to that!
I find the form of the response for the theme interesting and well doned! When you meet someone that was part of your life years ago and you didn't expect to see her or him here, it's really a good example how the world feel small!

A good work and a nice game !

Ok I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed this! Only game with a 5/5 mood and 5/5 humor that I gave so far. I also love how you integrated the theme.

I also really love how immersive it felt. I really felt that I was in an awkward conversation. And I love how the two faces showed what she was thinking and what she was showing.

Overall really amazing, and I thank you for making this, and I will be on the lookout for your future games!

Just awesome story! You should work in the video game industry. It could help to have great story instead of...

I really like your story games, Pierrec, and this one gave me some laughs, but I also though it was a bit too short. Thanks for the game!

Also, all that your text adventures need to be a "real" game is multiple endings :-)
🎤 Pierrec
26. Apr 2012 · 18:38 UTC
@caranha : I'm glad you liked it. But I (friendly) disagree with what you just said. I don't think multiple endings are enough to turn a text adventure into a real game, it's much more complicated than that. In fact...real game features aren't necessary to make a "real game", I think the only important thing is that the player FEEL it is a game, even if it's not. Never Alone Hotline for exemple felt like a game, because the player could invent his own wining and losing conditions, even if there was only one ending. This one doesn't feel like a game, because the player quickly feel I want to lead him somewhere. Moreover, because he can see Amy's thoughts, he doesn't even have the freedom to think by himself. This thoughts might be an interesting narrative item, but there are AWFUL game design items. To turn Ok...Now this is akward into a game, I should had rethink everything, I should had try to trick the player to make him feel he's actually playing, even if he's not.
(I talk about it in my post mortem : http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2012/04/26/ok-now-this-is-akward-post-mortem-timelapse/

But after all, this is good : I've tried new things, and I learnt from them. The next game will be better!

27. Apr 2012 · 00:02 UTC
Ok the "real", was because you yourself commented (in your post-mortem) that you would "make a real game" next time. I might have not expressed myself, but when I mentioned "multiple endings" I was actually thinking of Alone Hotline: Even though there is only "one ending", you could consider each mini dialogue in that game as a different "mini game", and because your choices would affect the ending of each mini game, in a sense that game had "multiple endings".

I more or less considered this game to be about the same as one of the "mini games" in Alone Hotline, so that is why I ended up talking about "multiple endings" :-), cheers!

Sorry, not in the post mortem, your "real game" comment came from one of your replies above. That was what I was replying to.

Je me disais que tu aurais du mal à faire mieux que Never Alone Hotline, mais je pense que tu as réussi haut la main.
Franchement, bravo !
Les graphismes sont très bien et plus développé que sur NAH, et le jeu m'a encore plus fait rire.
Une fois de plus, une grande réussite.

Loooove how you handled the concept and the graphics. Our entry has the same "Tiny World" idea of "relationships" and stuff like that. And we are from Argentina, so it's fun to see how in France there's also this "Oh, it's a small world idea"... Anyway congratulations!
