Escape this Tiny World Alone by StarDynamic

[raw]
made by StarDynamic for LD23 (JAM)
With the government collapsed and the world in turmoil, you decide to Escape this Tiny World... Alone.
Get into orbit to win.
Controls: Arrow Keys (Left & Right)

This is Hikari1100 and StayDynamic's first Ludum Dare.
We planned on working alone for the Jam in Java.
We met this really awesome guy on the IRC who goes by Zapa.
Zapa wanted to work in C++ and GDK but needed help since he was releasing a new game with his company and needed to be at work for most of the event.
I thought it would be cool to work in C++ given that I only had less than a few months to work with SDL.
All three of us started out ok on the first day but over time Zapa was continually called into work and I was the main programmer.
Zapa tried as best he could to help us out. He even stayed awake for more than three days between work and us just to help us.
Unfortunately, Zapa disappeared on Sunday
I really wanted to finsh a game though so I gave up on C++ and coded the entire game from scratch in Java.
Here is our finished product.

Our thanks go to Zapa for being awesome.

Make sure you have the newest Java Runtime Environment installed.

If you have any questions or concerns email me @ staydynamic@gmail.com

PS: Collect the propane tanks to get more propane.

I wasn't able to run this on windows 7 even after installing the newest JRE.

requires Java 7 so can't really test, not much is compatible with 7 yet and it would break too much on my system.

***I'm posting this on all non-browser games I bring up in an attempt to encourage folks to make browser games next time around. Do not take it personally.***

When hundreds of people make non-browser games, that means that, to play all of the entries, I would need to download hundreds of games to my computer. I typically use OS X, so Windows-only entries are particularly inconvenient.

Please consider making a browser game next time.

Devwil, I will embed my game into my website next Ludum Dare.
I changed the download from a .rar to a .zip for convenience.
Thanks again!

Quite fun and moody. I got the impression that certain plays of the game just didn't provide a distribution of propane that would allow you to win the game, and so it became more dependent on luck rather than skill whether you actually won the game. Also, I thought the propane tanks were bombs to start with. :D

WHY AM I IN A CATBALLOON?

As trylle said, the distribution of propane does not always feel right. The slow movement of the balloon doesn't help either. I managed to finish the game anyway :) Thanks!

Those bombs can't be good... oh, they're propane? :) Might want to specify that ingame. (leave some empty ones at the base of the balloon or something). Also, can it not close when you lose? I'd love to try again.

Fun to play and had a cat in it; therefore: good game.

I played the version under Linux and you have some issues with case-sensitive resource names. I had to rename Propane.png to propane.png and Death.mp3 to death.mp3 to get it working correctly. Be sure to check that more carefully next time.

Otherwise nice little game. Enjoyed playing it.

World IS in turmoil, with propane dropping from the sky!

I loved kaboom! on the atari 2600 (back in the day), some similar feel. Like the cat balloon. :)
