Quark by Mach60KAS

[raw]
made by Mach60KAS for LD23 (COMPO)
Not only my first LD, but my first full game made too! (Well, one could very easily argue that it is not a game. I for one class it as a silly experiment into the fray of nearly-silent games). Still, Enjoy!

You play as Quark, a sentient elementary particle as he embarks on his short journey throughout the atomic world. Quark was once a scientist named Clark, consumed by a horrific lab accident and thought to have disappeared entirely - when in fact he is about to receive the ultimate prize.

Arrow Keys to move(Left and Right move, Up to Jump). A, S, and D set Blue, Green and Red forms respectively.

I really like the idea of changing state to use different abilities. I think you could have taken that idea further with some more challenging puzzles/rooms.

The art style is really nice too.

I found the text a little hard to read because of the font.

Great work!

It looks great, but it was a bit easy, and I really wanted to shoot something.

Very good for a first entry!

Good game overall, I think there may have even been a particle joke? It would be cool if it was more difficult because if you used the right ability it was very easy.

An elementary concept. Was sad it ended, I was ready to pwn some leptons ;)

The graphics were great, and what a cool gameplay idea! But, I didn't really have any fun. As there wasn't much to do (Although I'm sure that's because it's not fully complete yet, right?) The ending was cute.

Thanks for all the feedback! Yeah, I agree that the game isn't very fun in its current state (presenting no challenge at all - eek!). So, maybe one day you'll be able to shoot something using our good friend Quark? Besides, I'd really love to make this so much better.

Nice - liked this one. Would be cool to dole out the abilities over time, the introductory text was a little too much for my brain to process in one meal. But fun premise. Would definitely play a longer version that used the abilities in different ways.

Ending cracked me up.

I could change my abilities... but I never had to actually do that? It seemed you could just beat the game using the jumpy one. It's a solid idea, I would have really liked to see some more use of it!

I enjoyed the graphics though. Very cheesy ending joke you have there.

I like it! Definitely a gameplay mechanic with potential. The font could have been a little bigger, but otherwise the graphics were good. And the ending definitely made me smile :)

I was like "what the hell?!" for 5 minutes trying to figure out what was going on. Then when I thought I got the hang of it I was attacked by the bow xD fun game!

I really like the art style and concept. The sound played when text was drawn was a bit too loud and annoying. Other than that, great game, would like to see what you could do with the 3 state mechanic.

Really original to have 3 powers and switch them to pass different things.
Actually it was a little to simple. You should add some more levels.

Good job btw ;)

Very much liked the idea of changing state and the particle setting is really original. Missed some electron boss monsters and some more puzzles.

BUG ALERT! When I die in the blue sigil level, it restarts me in the level that you start in....but floating in midair away from the land area, so i am doomed to an endless loop of falling and restarting. I played several levels before that happened, though.

PS I think its rather amusing how you teased the players with a shoot button and nothing to shoot. Say, that gives me a game idea...

@MadGnomeGamer I had noticed a very similar bug in the green room with 100% reproducibility, though I have died in the blue room several times with no ill consequences. I have a feeling it's the checkpoint system messing up colossally - it presented quite a few problems during production.

Congratulations on you first game :D

I didn't need the different forms, I only used the fast one :P
I guess you didn't have time to add enemies and other stuff that forces the player to use them.

I suggest you to move the dialog key (W) somewhere else on the keyboard because sometimes I pressed it accidentally, having to go through the whole message again.

Keep working on it, it's a good game idea :)

Good idea but there could have been more content, you didn't even get to use the red power! Also the different powers could have altered the characters appearance somehow. But nice job for your first game.

@Oye Beto: That was a testing feature I had to test the text boxes - I guess I forgot to remove it then. Oops! :P

The font you used for instruction text is hard to read, although, I suppose it is tiny.

great mechanics, such a shame the weren't further explored :( maybe a post-compo version?

The text is extremely hard to read and the game is altogether too easy, I think. However, the graphics, the sound effects, and the idea were very well done. The red gem was useless to me because when I entered the red room (after completing the blue) there were no monsters (which, according to the helper thing, before it was full of them...)

I seem to have had issues with the controls and collisions, I did skip a lot of the text because it was so small, so it might have been my fault for skipping most of it, but sometimes the states would only work once. Nice idea though. You should totally work on it some more.

Looks great but on Mac OS X I was stuck at the very first dialogue - nothing I pressed would make it go away. I could switch forms and that was it.

The loooong intro text and sound was so annoying then I accidentally pressed up again and it started over. It looks like this could be a cool game but I couldn't sit through the intro again.

Really nice game. The changing state was good. Shame it is so short.
The font was tricky to read though, and the text sound was really grating.

Now that's some creative project. Bad font, but good style. It could evolve in a really nice game, if you keep it up. Good luck!

Nice idea, but it really didn't go anywhere. I suspect this was just the start of a much larger idea.

The info messages were annoying (get the first one multiple times accidently), there should be a quick-skip option.
I went to the generator and then didn't know how to continue.
The font is hard to read.

One of the few entries I've played to the end. Cool graphics, nice sound effects and interesting concept. A few suggestions though: The text font was hard to read, so you may better try with another one, also you should make more visible the current phase; just changing the color of the sign on its forehead is not exactly what I would call visible (i mean, it's get impossible to tell the current phase the further you are from the screen). Anyway, solid and polished entry. Congratulations.
