Alone (Except for some Snakes) by BlueShaman

[raw]
made by BlueShaman for LD22 (COMPO)
Note:
There are some bugs with the resetting of the game when you die; currently I know of the planks being kept between days. This is not intentional; I would suggest relaunching / refreshing the game after you die to make sure nothing is persistent to see my actual intentions.

Note:
I report a sharp decrease in FPS on the web version, so you might prefer to play on an application, or with the source (which is the fastest).

Instructions can be found on the title:
Move with WASD.
Spacebar chops down trees & eats fruits.
Mouse left destroys (at expense of hunger).
Mouse right creates (at expense of planks).

X marks the spot.
Collect treasure the treasure there (one meter of how well you did).

Snakes move faster at night! Also, beware the large snakes. They can break through walls.

So, to detail the game.
The map is generated, and, slowly regenerated.

You need to have sustenance to keep surviving- you fill your hunger bar by eating fruit. Time and snakes empty it.

Cutting down trees (space) gives you planks to use.

Nice little game. I wasn't sure what to expect. At the beginning it was a bit laid down and slow, walking around, collecting stuff and avoiding the occasional worm. Then i decided to start following the X and quickly i came upon a whole herd of snakes lusting after my blood! Planting planks frantically i ran away like mad and, just by a few pixels of luck, managed to get away. However i was too tired from the run that a couple of minutes later i didn't notice a small worm that came and sucked out the last drops of blood from my rectangular body.

Good work :-)

When I made the game, I didn't have too much intention of making the snakes killable. And I never did. :3.

So you have no weapon to fight them except running. :D

Not bad. Good game play, although sometimes it's a bit unfair - massive amounts of snakes after me deeper into the game...

Nice idea! Snakes are terryffying, and the low-health-effect works quite well.

My biggest disappointment with the low-health effect is that sometimes you die too quickly. Then the effect is ruined.

Thank you.

Web link broken.. Hm... My host must have been down for a minute or too then. It's working now.

Nice game overall, created a nice atmosphere. I also liked the level design. Got a bit repetitive after a while.

A lot of interesting and lovely mechanics in this game. I love the night fall and snake aggression that comes with it. Props also for procedural content and destructible terrain.

Great work!

Very original, and quite fun. It's assets are done quite effectively, but minimally. The one thing I would say is that (this might be because I'm using a trackpad) the ability to create and destroy blocks seemed sort of tacked on; it seemed that you were more likely to die while deleting blocks than you were just by running.

Neat! I admit it's kind of easy to get a boring/"false start" run where you just die really fast, but after trying again I got into a pretty intense situation and I saw the fun in it. I might suggest something like discrete hit points and an invulnerability counter as opposed to hunger/life that drains quickly over time, so that you can still give that feeling of "oh shit, get out of here!!!!" without running into the case of "oh sh--wait i'm dead already, oh well." Creating planks to divert the snakes was kind of interesting. Nice job on the procedural generation.
