The idea of shooting organs is kind of funny, so I'll give you points for that. However, the game isn't very fun- the level design is bland and without direction, the music is grating, and it barely fits with the theme. Excuse the harshness.\r<br\/>I hope you have better luck with your next game."},{"author_name":"Pierrec","author_uid":"1874","time":"Dec 20, 2011 @ 8:48pm","epoch":1324413780,"text":"I love the shooting organ-losing life concept. It reminds me a previous Ludum Dare "Enemy as weapon" except here it's more "weapon as enemies". Graphics are nice too. I'm not sure you're allowed to use this music (even if it is public domain) so I won't rate the audio. Nice first game."},{"author_name":"VonZippenstein","author_uid":"7436","time":"Dec 21, 2011 @ 1:45am","epoch":1324431600,"text":"There really aren't enough sea cucumber heroines in video games."},{"author_name":"summaky","author_uid":"1885","time":"Dec 25, 2011 @ 4:12pm","epoch":1324829220,"text":"Nice first game. I couldn't find any glaring bug. However cool is to shoot your own organs, though, it was rather pointless because the damage and the effect on the enemies was the same as if I touched them directly. Regarding the music, I will believe you made it within the competition's time frame and that you have permission to use it (I don't know whether it is public domain), so it is OK to use it in LD48."},{"author_name":"Aaron","author_uid":"7118","time":"Dec 26, 2011 @ 12:56am","epoch":1324860660,"text":"Random generators are always tricky--easy to generate a lot of content versus unable to balance\/test possibilities. My first attempt swarmed me with enemies from the get go, killing me before I knew what was going on. My second attempt seemed to only have a single jellyfish enemy the entire level, but shooting crashed the game. My last attempt had a much nicer balance, but it showed some of the holes in your game design. \r<br\/>\r<br\/>Like the others, I like the novelty of your concept but the unbalance kinda rendered it pointless. I think small tweaks are all it takes to make this into a fun game. :)"}],"images":["ld22\/6930-8c7567fcf73ff148bfa47fd446dcb007.jpg","ld22\/6930-ca144b189b1f9aa50096d7826f6ce640.jpg","ld22\/6930-84ad440216fb7e44f16ca1ef30388bb9.jpg"],"links":[{"url":"http:\/\/web.uvic.ca\/~savaged\/trepang_win32.zip","text":"Windows"}],"metadata":{"g_key":"31675","g_author":"6930","g_event":"LD22","g_eventkey":"8","g_subevent":"JAM","g_urlkey":"31705","g_title":"TREPANG","g_status":"UCHK1","g_place":"131","g_commentcount":"5","g_site2_node_id":"0","g_hide":"N","g_has_icon":"Y","g_rqueue":"0","g_random":"0"},"nds":[],"node":null,"orig_images":["http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/compo2\/\/87574\/6930-shot0.png-eq-900-500.jpg","http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/compo2\/\/87574\/6930-shot1.png-eq-900-500.jpg","http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/compo2\/\/87574\/6930-shot2.png-eq-900-500.jpg"],"text":"Run 'trepang.exe' to play.\r\n\r\n-----\r\nUPDATE: As of 12\/23\/2011 the game has been updated. It doesn't run in fullscreen anymore and crashes way less. If you found it crashing the first time, play this and see how it goes.\r\n\r\n------\r\nHOW TO PLAY:\r\nPress Z to shoot an organ. This gets rid of some of your life.\r\nArrow keys to move. Get to exit.\r\n------\r\n\r\nTrepang (aka \"Project Chordwing\") was done by us! We're Dan, Wilson, and Eric, and we're undergraduates from the University of Victoria. None of us before had any real gamedev experience, so pardon us if you find it pretty crappy. We love it like our child in all its DOS-like goodness.\r\n\r\nTrepang is the story of Wopley the Sea Cucumber, out on an adventure to escape the endless cave. Sadly sea cucumbers aren't that smart, so Wopley doesn't realize the cave is endless. In order to \"complete\" his quest, Wopley must bypass countless evil Starfish, Squids, and Jellyfish blocking his path. But if he can't escape them, how can he defeat them? BY EJECTING HIS OWN ORGANS OF COURSE! Sea Cucumbers actually do that.\r\n\r\nThe theme of being \"Alone\" comes from the idea of being the only one of your kind and how you need to expend yourself in order to survive. Community is uplifting, and the game symbolizes its absence.\r\n\r\nWe coded TREPANG in C and SDL. The game generates random caves using cellular state automata and creates a solvable exit using Dijkstra's Algorithm. The rest is just regular game design magic. There are a lot of bugs, so if you find one, please post a comment. We could use it for fixes! Thanks!<\/p>","title":"TREPANG"}
