They just fly about a char lenght and fall down - the mothers are much much further away and can't reach them. Make sure you're clicking at the target or near it, not near the boy. The biggest problem, I think, is that I can't move at all and the moms are most of the time behind the TV which I can't throw the cans through, so I lose concentration and can't do anything about it.
