I had to keep the rules text open while I played(something in-game would have been nice), made tons of bad mistakes, but the AI let me win anyway. There are some theories that perhaps the game was originally a betting game where the two players would make bets over how long it would take for the king to escape, not if he would.  That being said, I find the offense has a precarious advantage if they keep the board blocked up by not killing (many) defenders.
