HikariYami by robb_blob

Hello!

This has been our first game jam, and even though we have got tons of problems we're really proud of the outcome!

We embraced the idea of a dark entity in a world of light, who had to fuel his darkness in order to ascend, and shape shift into a superior being, allowing him to fight the world's light. We decided to both have this version and the opposite, a light being in a dark world. Sadly, due to last-hour problems, the release version only has the light being in a dark world, but in the source code, both do work.

And yeah, that's it. We loved the experience and hope to better ourselves next time, so we can end up doing great games =D

Last but not least, the team has been composed by Ferran (ferranduran) and Julien (BorisUlybka), on the art side, and by Robb (me), in the programming side.

CONTROLS:
Mouse to look at.
WASD to move.
Space to jump.
E to get light.
Esc to restart.

Aim of the game:

1. Find the streetlights and get their light.

2. Explore and find the last light in order to become a superior being.

Good luck!

The controls are a bit strange: it's not clear at first that your forward direction is where the mouse points at. The graphics are cool! It was very difficult to go up stairs, though.

I think the mood was excellent, and so the visual style, but the controls are a little strange, considering it is a platformer. It was easy to slip off by accident and need to restart.

Yeah, I definetely wanted to change them to something more like Alien Swarm for example, but didn't have time to in the end T_T

I find cutting gravity and using a small force to accelerate the player upwards when jump is pressed and then cutting it when jump is released. That usually works better than using a large impulse to make the player jump.

Anyways, cool entry. I like the graphics!

Felt like a nice kinda horror themed game, kinda peculiar why you didn't want to get scored on mood even though I would think that is one of the strong suits of your game. As other people have already commented the controls were a bit wonky at times but usable. I have some tips on the sound assets, the sound assets chosen matched well with the graphics and the intended mood but it could be enhanced even further by putting some reverb on your sfx, this invokes a feeling of emptiness (since reverbs generally occur in large empty spaces) and further enhances the feeling of loneliness that the game already carries. I otherwise loved the visual style that your game has, good effort!

Too bad there isn't the light world, it sure would have helped to understand the concept of HikariYami. Controls are particuliar but didn't bothered me. Soundtrack is well done, kinda creepy but not too much, just what it needs.

It took me some time to get used to the controls, but after I did, the gameplay became much easier for me. The idea is quite interesting! Light among darkness - it seems to me that would look a bit like Unfinished Swan...

Fun game, while the controls are odd it is a different mechanic. Good job
