Disco? Very! by Tom 7
This is a dance platformer written in Flash, for the competition. All legit.
Followed the "misheard theme" approach that I also used in LD #17 with "Is Lands?". Can't resist it. But this game also does have a 'discovery' theme in addition to the dancing. Compared to last time, I planned a lot better and concentrated on things I knew how to do pretty well, so I think this one came out decent. I'm sad about what's on the cutting room floor, though.
Includes:
- Classic VGA graphics!
- Boss battle!
- There's actually something to do in the game!
- You pretty much have to explore the very boring attic!
- Three original video game tunes!
- See if you can find the 2-3 mostly cosmetic bugs that I couldn't fix in time!

Jam version fixes all known bugs and has some tiny improvements to things that people found confusing.

Metroidvania but you get to dance. I approve :)
It's creatively lock-and-key but I actually enjoyed it, just got a bit confusing at the end.
BLATANT THEME VIOLATION... I approve ;D AND you managed to somehow follow the theme, too. Good job!
Graphics are pretty neat, actually.
Audio... music doesn't quite gel with the game theme. The music itself is alright, though.
Doesn't seem to be riddled with humour, but it's there.
Overall, we have a somewhat short game.
You have ONE blog post, apparently. So not so crash hot with respect to community involvement. This does not say anything about respect, though.
There are some graphical glitches. This dude sliding stayed on screen for me the whole game through.
Then i just can't get past this dancing dude although he keeps telling me nice. I bet there is a way. But the idea is worth a try, so please keep working on that.
Fun to play, great music and did I say fun? Wait a sec, where is the difference between humor and fun in here?
joekinley: You found one of the three cosmetic bugs. What is wrong with this code? :)
public function kill() {
trace('kill boss');
for (var o in shadows) {
shadows[o].removeMovieClip();
shadows = [];
}
}
I stared at the shadow stuff for several minutes, finally chalking it up to weird Flash behavior (it does definitely have some wrt movieclip longevity, that has bit me before), but of course the bug is completely shallow. Guess that goes to show how staying up late and being sick can make me a bad programmer.
Anyway, I fixed all the known bugs for the jam version and made some other small improvements (total of about 1 hour of work), but people should of course judge the compo version.

If you want hints (not really recommended; the game is supposed to be self-explanatory):
1. You have to discover the dance moves by exploring.
2. There are four total dance moves.
3. When on the disco floor, be patient and participate in the danceoff.
4. The boss will be impressed if you can dance like him.
5. Sadly there are no secrets after the game seems to be over. It's only a 48h contest! :)
I think this is a nice take on the discovery theme with the disco and discovering of new abilities. Really good attention to detail, especially with the disco music getting less loud as the character moves away from the dance floor room.
Not sure if this is a bug or not, but at one point I got knocked back by the boss and when I left the room the image of the boss was still shown in the other rooms.
Actually quite good music! I like the dance moves as powerups and the dance off is also neat.
The controls are bit floaty, but seriously, it's been 48 hours only.
Well done!
