Shape Shifted by Simple Potential

[raw]
made by Simple Potential for LD35 (COMPO)
Welcome to my Ludum Dare 35 entry. The theme for LD35 was "Shapeshift". While this is a Compo entry, I actually only had right about 24 hours to put it together due to unforeseen circumstances. Very stressful and nearly decided to make it a Jam entry instead but was able to get just about everything in the game that I wanted so here we are!

While I've included an embedded version of the game, it's best played downloaded or over on itch.io (see link below). The embedded version is cut off and you have to use the full screen button which isn't playing nicely with my build due to height/width restrictions on the LD submission page.

The game is ever so originally titled "Shape Shifted". Instructions will display, but basically you use A, S, D, F to change the shape in the capture boxes in the lower part of the screen (with the first box being A, the second being B, etc...). Match them to the falling shape to gain points. Capture, or chain, matches to increase score multipliers, gain extra lives, and cause shapes to appear and fall faster.

White shapes = 10 pts
Green shapes = 20 pts & fall about 30% faster
Red shapes = 50 pts & fall about 50% faster

If you fail to match a shape you'll lose a life and half the points the shape was worth.

Please rate my game, thanks! Let me know if you have any questions!

Not really my kind of game, reminds me too much of a casino game or something. Congrats for doing it on compo!

Good job! Still needs better audio and maybe more progression.

@vootele, yeah audio is defiantly not my strong point and I was putting it in during the last 30 minutes of the compo :) Thanks for playing!

@Nomys_Tempar, I was sort of going for that casino/guitar hero style, I knew it would appeal to everyone but thank you for taking time to play. Life got in the way this time around so hopefully I can plan better for LD36 :)

This is my kind of game I think! Simple to pick up and no bugs as well so well done! It's a bit slow, but I think that is personal preference!

I like it! It has a solid sort of Othello principle (easy to learn, hard to master) going. This feels like it would be a great game to play on iOS/Android using touch controls and increasing speeds.

@jcmonkey, thank you!
@AngerFork, I agree and will likely play with this concept a bit more, thanks

Nicely done. I like the skill progression. It got harder at a nice rate (but I am bad at this kind of game).

I enjoyed it, but damn it's difficult. Maybe a slower speed at the start would have made it easier to get into. Sound is a bit jarring for headphone users. Fit the theme really well. Good job!!

The progression in difficulty felt way too slow.

@Blobo I kind of agree but when I had others play it they thought it was too hard because it progressed too fast. I was hoping I got it to happy medium but reading the comments on here and what friends are telling me it looks like I still missed the happy medium, some say to slow others to fast.

Cool game. Maybe audio and graphics could be better (audio is a bit repetitive), but the game is funny overall

@AnaGF - Thanks! Definitely audio could be better, it is not my strong suit at all.

I really freaked out when I saw different colors and wasn't sure what they meant. But I figured it out quickly enough. Does a good job of lulling you into feeling like you're competent, then a red block falls and you freak out hammering on keys and screwing yourself up. Congrats on finishing. Nice job!

Simple, effective, fits the theme, just a little repetitive, but it works. :)

It is not my favorite kind of game, the mechanic is a bit simple, but it works fine.

Pretty simple but fun entry. The difficulty progression felt mostly spot on although red shapes probably need to appear more frequently as time goes on.
