Space Race by feips

[raw]
made by feips for LD 38 (JAM)

Space Race is a gravity jump and run. Use you jetpack and a few items to jump between planets to reach the finish platform as fast as you can.

Have fun!

Everything was made by me, except the font I used (http://www.1001freefonts.com/homespun.font) and the music, which was made by a good friend (Tjum).

Edit 1: I fixed a bugged planet texture.

Edit 2: I added new and better music.

Edit 3: I fixed a bug where 2 music tracks played simultaneously.

Nice and fun game but very hard for me.
It took me a while to understand how to target a direction at the beginning. And it is not easy to know what the objects do.

Well done! - although much too hard for me. I'd recommend slowing the astronaut a bit down, at least at the beginning.

Tell Tjum the music is good. ;)

I loved the concept and graphics, but the game felt suuuuuuuuuuuper hard :D

Everything was super smooth, the graphics are awesoeme, the zoom out and rotation help a lot, however i found it super hard to control! My biggest issue was handling the guy once he took off, I thought moving him with the arrows key would make him rotate, but no, ive tried rotating the camera aswell but the spaceman keeps crashing on its head to all planets, maybe there is something I'm missing!?

Really nice game, just very difficult, but the instant restarts made me want to keep trying again. Only small problem is that it would have been nice for there to be instructions for the controls before I started, but once I figured it out it was a lot of fun. Experimenting with different possible routes and approaches was super fun

The soundtrack was awesome too, well done to your friend.

Wow :D Was a bit hard to understand exactly how to control my player, but after that I had a lot of fun :D The idea is shiny and great - Really good job!

Quite good entry. I died numerously and the game is quite hard to beat. Few points:

- it could use larger zoom
- it is impossible to get into stable orbit (while it shouldn't be!)
- it could use better graphics (I honestly hate over-pixelated graphics, and having this hand-painted or just higher resolution would make it a lot better entry)

Anyways I liked it, and that is quite an exception for pixel art games. Thanks for creating and sharing!

Very well done. I liked the concept of using the gravitational pull of planets to move. But as everyone else is saying, it is very hard to beat. I didn't manage to do it. also the graphics are very nice and so was the music.

Very cool idea for a game mechanic, well designed! Mechanics can get frustrating very fast but I guess in a non-jam version this could be implemented with more of a progression curve. Looks super pretty, except for the gravity radius lines on higher zoom levels, but it's a minor detail. The best "planets-in-space-category" game I've tried this jam.

Good job! I liked the concept, and the different types of planets were a lot of fun. I also liked the gravity mechanic a lot! Sadly, as others have said, the game was a bit difficult, and I think it's partly because of its lack of control when you're in space. Walking around planets and jumping feels really good, because all of the physics were well done, but it was impossible to control your character while in space. Even having a tiny bit of control could greatly impact the game, in my opinion. Also, the music is fantastic, and your friend did a great job with it. The graphics were great too. I had a lot of fun with this, and thanks!

Cool idea cool concept and fun, it's a bit too dificult for me and I really thought the three second countdown at the start being a real pain everytime I pressed R I had to wait for no reason. Thanks anyways other than that I really enjoyed it

Hey guys, thank you for your nice comments and suggestions. I think I didn't make it clear enough that you can rotate your player with q and e and press space to accelerate forward, sorry for that.

This game is very hard!!, the idea of the game and mechanics are interesting, tho. I also like the graphics and sounds but I think that making it a little bit easier would be good.

The controls were a bit confusing at first (forgot to read the controls menu on first play), but afterwards they become easy to use. As said before, the start countdown is a bit long.

Love the graphics, they look very modern! For some reason it reminds me of Firewatch!

Nice game! As others have already mentioned, the controls make it a bit difficult. I think, personally that they would be simpler if you didn't have to use q/e, always just WASD. Also, sometimes I'd land on a planet and die, probably because I was poisoned or something, but it wasn't very clear and thus didn't feel quite fair (perhaps a flashing warning would have made this a positive instead of a negative). That's all just minor crit though, the game is very impressive for LD! :D

Edit: SICK MUSIC.

Fun game! Interesting mechanics. Only idea I have for an improvent is adding a tutorial, so i can learn all the different planet types and controls incrementally.

This was really cool. I loved the graphics. I've seen lots of small planet platforms, but this one feels pretty unique to play. I found the game fairly difficult, which is fine, but I think a lot of that difficulty was the result of not knowing where I was going and having issues with the controls. It might be easier to fly if the mouse was used to control the direction of the astronauts. I also think the game would benefit form a tutorial.

Overall really great!

I suck at this game, but I like the concept of it.

Really cool idea, and while it took a little bit to get my bearings, I thought it was interesting to play. My biggest comment is actually about the mood - the start timer and the music give it a sense of urgency, like it's some kind of race... But with the whole resource balance situation, the actual gameplay comes off more as a puzzle game. I think it would be worth trying to align those things a little better.

Interesting idea! Really difficult. It took me a very, very long time before I didn't die on my first jump, probably because it didn't seem like Q/E did anything, and I didn't realize I could maneuver after jumping. I couldn't figure out why Q/E and A/D were different keys, I kept on hitting the wrong one, seems like either should do the same thing (just depending on context)?
